Battery Cable Routing? 70 LeMans
 

How is the positive battery cable routed from the tube on engine to the battery?

Pictures?

How is it kept away from steering shaft and brake lines?

I think it snakes along the top of the inner fender along with the front harness but what happens in between engine and the fender?

It seems the cable loops through only one of the clips/ties and just drapes above the steering shaft.

So the right cable length is the key to keeping it suspended high enough to clear everything.

I'm close to installing the battery so will soon know how it plays out.

What am I missing?

I installed the cable and don't like the way it drapes from engine to inner fender.

Do I have the wrong "tube" on the engine?

Is there another clip on the engine to raise the cable higher?

As it sits, I am concerned the cable could contact the shaft which is clearly a bad idea....and it's not smart.... and it is dangerous.

Looks like the factory diagram, maybe the angle of the tube is too angled toward fender?

I'm curious to see others' cable routing. Anyone have photos they can share to show the clearance between + cable and steering shaft?

Mike, Here is the routing on '69 350 HO, but it should be the same as any V8 A-body w/o RA manifolds. The original cable sheathing is pretty long and extends through the tube down to the solenoid and could provide protections from the steering shaft. The original plastic retainer strap can be seen in the first photo with the dual quad set-up.

Looks like the engineers used a sheath to reduce risk. I'll try and find something similar.

Appears your clearance is about the same as mine so it's just the way it is.

It's not a great design but must have been good enough!

Apparently not easy to find something durable.

Anyone know a source for Kevlar/aramid braided sheathing by the foot? Most of it appears to be PET or polypropylene which won't hold up as well.

Cable protection
 

Try a search for asphalt wire sheathing or loom. This is the braided cloth tar impregnated covering that was used on cables for heat and rash protection on the lower section of cable to the starter. It is sold in different diameters by the foot. It's not kevlar but always held up.

Thank you both. I may have some of that tar-coated stuff. I'm surprised that was the original but sounds like another "good enough"!

Just to agree with Dennis. My '70 had the same setup. Didn't have any pictures with the fenders still attached.

I still need to find some sheathing, but for now, mine isn't touching anything.

Looks like yours may actually touch the steering shaft!

I'm surprised it's not touching more. Front end was removed at that point and battery end should have been hanging to the floor. Tube was also disconnected from engine stud.
