rear sway bar fitment with different rearends
 

Hi, I might be putting a new rear in my car and am researching options to help make a decision. One thing I want to retain is the sway bar I am already using.

My car is a 1967 GTO, TH400 with a 1969 Grand Prix 10 bolt, limited slip and 3.23's. As far as I know the rear is all original except for the bearings and seals I put in 20+ years ago. It's not grabbing like it used to and before I put any $ in it I am considering another and stronger rear. It appears readily available options are a GM 12 bolt and a 9" Ford. The sway bar and boxed control arms I have are original Pontiac parts. Has anyone know if the factory bar works with either of these rears?

Factory bar works fine with a 12 bolt. Would think it would be fine with a 9” as long as it’s a factory size housing, not one of the real beefy aftermarket housings.

Course the Moser rear was designed to go under a A-Body Vehicle.
My housing is Beefy/ aftermarket and I run a Strange center section in the housing.

Strange S-60 fit is perfect , i have the GM arms & bar in my 64 GTO

Sure, but helps to grind for clearance across the S-60 center-section lower casting. I didn't, but would if a fresh install.

Sometimes the 'bow' in the bar makes contact with the center section of a 9" because of the offset, have seen that happen.

The tubes on the 9" are larger diameter too, the tailpipe bends might have a clearance issue for so exhausts.

Post #7 is what i'm claiming for the S-60 installs; mod-lower casting could use a grind. Insp cover probably okay.

Changed 7/8 GM bar to 1" UMI & clears center section by 1" now , GM one was 1/4" gap, rides nicer & no chance of binding .

Gm designed those factory bars around 12 bolts in a-bodies starting in 1970. My Chevelle has it's factory 12 bolt and rear bar setup still in place. I'd bet the bar isn't much more than a 1/4" from the bottom of the rear. Been that way since it was born by design. No fear of any rubbing or binding.

I have a Quick Performance 9 Inch with the jack pad. I am using the UMI sway bar and it fits nicely. It blocks a little of the jack pad but not enough for it to be a deal breaker.

I'm doing a quick performance 9" this week with drain and jack pad and installing the factory GM Monza rear sway bar on a Vega (same chassis)
There will be plenty of room.
