Thoughts on broken block boss
 

I’m considering getting this block for a spare but the owner sent me this picture. Is this repairable? It’s a 73 400.

What year car is it going in as you may not need that boss?

I ran a 455 almost just like that for 30 yrs. In an A body. So, I didn`t worry about it as I was using the 2 bolt mounts. This is at 470 to 500 hp level with solid mounts.


I sold that motor to member GTO TEX here. He`s using it in a 2`nd gen Trans Am. I showed him the boss before he bought it. He bought it anyway.


He`s telling me the damn thing goes 12.7`s in the quarter with 2.41 gears at full weight. So, the motor is no slouch.


Maybe give him a pm to see what he did.

I fixed a Chevy starter bolt hole by putting a 3/8 x16 stud into a engine lathe and drilling a 1/8th hole into the center. Then I tig welded it into the block with Ni rod. When it cooled I drawfiled it flush with the rest of the block. I then drilled it out with a 5/16 drill bit and tapped it to 3/8 x16.

Whats the story with the rest of the block?

Anything else put it close to the dumpster?

Other than the other mount bolts falling out and that one breaking while running a bone head move caused that breakage and one would have to wonder iff theres more

If that hole is not needed, just smooth off the rough edges and leave it. If that hole is needed for an engine mount bolt: clean the hell out of the area and weld the entire area up with a silicon bronze welding rod. Shape and form a new lug with a die grinder. Drill and re-tap the hole. Good as new. I would not scrap a block with just that little rat bite on it. Easily repaired.

One last thought if the boss is needed...

Put a longer bolt in it, weld the boss up with the bolt in, then cut off the head of the bolt. Now you have a stud.

Lots of options. As mentioned, certainly not a big deal with street HP.

I like that fix. That would be fast and easy with a silicon/bronze rod. A little pre-heat to the boss area, weld it up, cut off the bolt head, dress it a little, run a die over the first couple threads your done.
