Losing hubcaps
This may be a dumb question, but here goes....My son's 65 Tempest crew cab has the Deluxe wheel disc hubcaps. Original hubcaps in undamaged condition on original wheels in good condition. He's thrown 3 hubcaps in the last couple of months. My 66 GTO has the 66 version of the same hubcap (same thing with minor cosmetic differences), and it's never lost a hubcap in 57 years and 258,000 miles. The only difference I'm aware of is the Tempest has 14x5 wheels, while the GTO has 14x6. Do the 5 inch wheels flex more? Is there anything I can do to prevent them from coming off?
Thanks, Importsmasher |
The driver is also a variable. My 65 Tempest has all the original hubcaps.

FWIW
Way back when my '66 was still wearing wheel discs I would randomly lose one.
It was always the PS front and it turned out to be the rim. Found out after rotating them, and the same rim would occasionally throw a disc. Replaced the rim and never had one come loose thereafter. |
I've chased this problem on several cars despite bending the tangs on the wheel cover to get a tight fit. My final solution was applying duct tape to the rim at a couple different spots where the cover makes contact. (you can tell by the deep gouges in the metal) solution is invisible, and problem went away.

GREAT idea, Andre!!!!!!!!

I had a customer put silicone on each grabbing point of the wheel cover on his 53 Chevy. It worked well because I had a hard time removing them.
