Towing - Best Adjustable Mount/Ball?
 

I will need to occasionally tow the GTO with my 2020 Ram Classic 1500 (5.7 Hemi) and need some recommendations on a decent mount/ball for the stock hitch/receiver (i.e. best 'bang-for-the-buck').

Since I don't own a trailer currently (would be renting for now), I was thinking an adjustable mount would be best to ensure the correct tow angle/safety for whatever trailer I use.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Been awhile since I've towed anything (previously boats).

That's a nice hitch setup. 2" and 2-1/2" are the most common. 1-7/8s isn't used much these days. So set it up with the first two.

I have a plate that bolt to the hitch and receiver that takes out hitch slap. But you have to remove it to get the hitch unit out of the receiver. Sure makes things a lot quieter.

I have been doing this for so long that I probably have every different one available. Both my trucks are the exact same height, so I only use two...One for the open trailer & one for the enclosed trailer.

I also LOVE the hitch clamp that removes the slight clunk . Mine is a different brand, but does the same thing & there was a thread about it some months back. Pictured below.

I have a bunch of trailers and found it easier to just get a cheap drop/rise ball mount for each of them and swap them out as needed

IF I had the occasion of pulling some ultra short tire/wheel small lawn mower trailer, an adjustable ball mount would come in handy. Otherwise, really have no use for the expense of a fancy "adjustable" ball mount.

My sons lifted 4WD F150 has big 35" tires on it. Earlier this year, he was coming into town & we were to use his truck to pull a normal hitch height 18 ft open car trailer with a big log splitter strapped down on it. As it was, my son did not have a ball mount to slide into his factory hitch. He'd never pulled with it. I ended up picking up a 4" drop ball mount from Harbor Freight before he arrived. Upon sliding it in, the ball sat too low. Ended up using one of my long time ball mounts. Have several, have used them on every truck & SUV have owned over the last 35 years & they worked perfectly. Simple 1/2" drop ball mount with a 2" DrawTite ball. Also have an identical ball mount, one with a 2 5/16" ball that have used pulling an enclosed car trailer. my .02

Call me frivolous, but I'm not hauling my customer's valuable investments down the interstate with the finest hitch Harbor Freight has to offer.

I'm not investing that kind of trust in a Harbor Freight ball mount either. We ended up taking the 4" drop ball mount back. Interesting thing is the Tractor Supply is right across the road & offers the same "quality" ball mounts, all a bunch of import stuff.

I buy at my local trailer sales and supply,SAY Trailers,Loyalhanna Pa. He knows what works in my opinion. On long trips like to Norwalk for me I carry a spare.

Curt 6” drop adjustable here (p/n 45900), very happy with it.

I just keep a 2" and a 2-5/8 ball in a separate mount. Easy peasy to swap. No addition pins to worry about.
