Exhaust Manifold Gasket
 

Hey, wanted to see if any uses the Permatex Hi Temp copper sealant when they are replacing the gaskets. Mine blew out on the drivers side and wanted to know if I should use it or just put the new one in without anything. Should be so much fun!!! Thanks, Marc.

Ahem; the metal-clad material (like a Briggs& Stratton head gasket ) is thee best for strength, and thermal resistance to keep manifold(header flange heat from conducting back into the HEAD.

All other methods and gaskets conduct high heat back into the heads.

Until recently I always ran the metal FelPro gaskets with minimal issues. With my recent built I switched to Remflex gaskets. Never any sealer with either gasket type. I try to avoid it on the exhaust system.

I went for the Remflex gaskets this time around when installing the log exhaust manifolds on my 421 HO.

I trimmed every bit of excess material off so as not to interfere with the dipstick tube or my battery cable tube shield. I think it’s much cleaner looking this way.

Also you should use new grade 5 bolts if your not already and don’t forget a light film of Antiseize, and even on the shank of the bolt .

I replaced my exhaust gaskets many years ago when the GM metal gaskets were still available from my dealer. I ran a Permatex Hi Temp copper sealant bead around all of them as advised to do so by a master mechanic I knew. Never had an issue up to this point.

RemFlex is the best manifold/header gasket available. Make sure to use good bolts. No sealant required ....

It's also important to make sure the surface of the exhaust manifold is flat.
