67 manual brake push rod
 
Anyone have a picture of the push rod for a manual drum brake 67? We are putting a dual reservoir master cylinder on my son's 65 Tempest, and we have a 67 master cylinder that said it was for manual brakes, but the push rod from his 65 doesn't fit. If I can see a picture, then maybe I can figure out how to make this work.

That diagram shows exactly what I just pulled off my son's car. I'm trying to see what the 67 configuration looks like, although according to Ames, all manual brakes use the same rod 64-72.

Does that include both single and dual reservoir masters?

According to Ames, yes. The issue I'm having is the original master cylinder has a shallow depression where the rod sits, and a retainer that is held in with a clip. The replacement master cylinder we bought, supposedly for a 67 GTO (power and manual brakes), has a deep hole in the back of the piston, and the retainer is too big to fit.

Hopefully that makes sense, and I am attaching pictures to try to illustrate.

Good information! Unfortunately my new master cylinder didn't come with a push rod. I think i have a rod like that though; I'll have to dig around the shop and see if I can find one.

I was able to use my original single pot master pushrod with the 2nd-gen F-body dual master without any mods to the pushrod assembly. It didn’t have anything retaining it like it did with the single master, I simply removed the retainer and clip and it worked fine with the 2nd-gen master.

The original pushrod came from my ‘64 Tempest that had factory power drum brakes.

When I went to the new ‘77 Malibu (and others) master that’s when I had to do a little work to make the pushrod compatible with the new master.

My concern is that without the retainer, the rod could fall out. Does it sit tightly enough that it won't fall out of the back of the new master cylinder? I didn't look that closely when I pulled it apart.

Maybe I should just weld an extension onto the original rod so that it protrudes into the deeper hole of the new master. That would allow me to use my original rod and not have a chance of it falling out.

It’s essentially trapped so it can’t fall out.

The brake pedal can only pivot towards the driver so far before it hits the stop. Put it all together and you’ll see.

No problem for me in 30k miles of daily commuting.

It’s probably easy to find a longer pushrod you an adapt like I was able to do, either at a local junkyard or even your local NAPA.

I saw this on Ames website, Maybe this is what I need. A different style push rod retainer that Ames lists for 67-72.

We used Summit Racing RSD-R03 push rod. Cut threads to fit manual 67 dual master conversion.

Thanks for the offer, but we ordered a later style push rod retainer (pictured in my post above) and it works great. Now we just have to finish plumbing everything in.
