Radio question

2 Attachment(s)
I finally started on my 70 gto and finally got a chance to go thru parts I received. This am/fm radio was in a bin. It looks like it might have come out of a grand prix looking at the trim plate. Is this a correct am/fm for a 70 gto? I would like to use it in my car if possible.

Tag decodes as a 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix AM/FM with rear fader.

thanks for the info. so is there any difference between this radio and the one that would have been in a 70 gto ? any visual differences?

Buttons will be molded BLACK on a '70 Pontiac A-body FM or FM stereo (multiplex). GP's received "chrome" buttons on their version through the '72 models.

Decades ago a practice several of us used to do is carefully remove the original "chrome buttons" & then swap them w those from a rough donor '70-77 AM-FM mono Firebird radio.

Great question. I cant find anyone who can tell me if a radio intended for a '70 GTO will fit my '70 GP !

The face bezel is the same & it will bolt right in if it's a factory '70 AM or an AM-FM mono. The '70 GTO AM-FM stereo, on the other hand, is a 2 piece affair, with a thick cable & a small amplifier (multiplex unit) that bolts above the glove box w a special bracket. Mounting such a two piece stereo behind the typical GP dash would require some effort w/o the correct bracket.

GTO and Grand Prix Radio Differences

If I remember correctly, the Grand Prix radio has other differences too. The heat sink is on the side of the radio frame and the antenna port is slightly different. But they will fit in a GTO. Not sure if a GTO radio will work in a GP however.
