Never seen this before
Ive had quite a few 2nd gen f bodies since becoming my favorite in 1987. I recently got a 78 and noticed an odd mod. Someone cut a ragged hole over the rear u joint in the back seat area. its between the back seats. the rest of the car is solid and dry ....Cartel things // car came out of cali 20 years ago...I have no idea..

Possibly a driveshaft broke and tore through it?
 |
Bingo!!
A U joint let go at least once in the passed. I saw such decades ago in a junk yard in a Chevelle a was srouging a rear out of. |
Its definately in the right spot!

On my 70 gto, when I pulled the rear seat out, I noticed a couple scallop shaped divots/holes in the floorpan.
WTH is all that? Talked to the guy I bought it from….oh yeah, we blew the rear u joint a couple times. |
Keep in mind, 2nd gens have a tendency to have their' floor pans sag. If you look from the rear of the car thru the back glass at the head rests, if they are tilted towards each other, the floor pan is sagging.
You can correct it by putting a 2x4 on a jack and jack the center of the floor pan up. If it is being difficult, you can stand on a rocker with the door open to add more leverage. I know how it sounds, but it is an issue with 2nd gens. Some other body styles too. A broken engine & trans mount together can cause a similar condition. . |
