I realize not many may be out there, but curious if any one can confirm the correct air cleaner lid finish for a 1973 Ram Air 400 or 455 option code WU3 RAM AIR on the Formula.

Was it a chrome lid as Parts Place is selling in this kit pictured for both the 400 455, or just a black finish in 1973?

Ramairnacho 06-24-2024 01:59 AM

Im.no.expert but I was under impression that 70 was a 1 year only chrome lid rest black.

Black

Here's how I have understood it;
  • The air cleaner lid was a part of the engine package.
  • For 1970 & earlier, chrome valve covers and air cleaner lids were included (as an engine dress up) on the Grand Prix, GTO & Firebird 400/4bbl engines.
  • After 1970 NO engine came with the chrome dress up (valve covers and air cleaner lid); so after 1970 the only way to get it was over the counter at the parts department.

Does that clear matters up?

Just ot muddy the waters a bit;
For 1970 & prior, a special air cleaner assemblies circumvented the chrome lid being included with the engine dress up.
EG: 1970 Trans Am used a shaker assembly, an the included lid was NOT chrome.

Later in 70's Pontiac Re Introduced the chrome valve covers on 400 Trans Am.
