Foam steering column base seal
 

Anyone know if these are being reproduced?

This is the foam seal that goes at the base of the steering column and prevents hot air from coming into the car via the void inside the steering column shaft.

It's 2" OD, 1.5" ID and 1" tall foam.

What model?

Don’t think I’ve ever seen that in repop….haven’t looked for it….and TBH that’s the first I’ve heard of it.

All that said, if it’s not…sure looks like you could wander down the plumbing aisle at big orange or red vest central and score something similar from the foam pipe insulation.

69, 70, 71 Firebirds and Trans Ams for sure had these from the factory and I suspect that many other GM models did as well.

Over time, most of these rotted away only leaving the paper like material on the faces. I lucked out on a very nice 70 column as the seal above was still in place and in reasonably good shape.

I don't think most people know that this seal exists, what it is supposed to look like and thus no one has ever thought to reproduce them. Mustangs had similar foam seals in the base of their columns as well.

I ordered the material and circular cutters to try make my own so we'll see how they turn out.

Great timing on the post. I just tore into my column and need one of those as well as some other stuff. My searches came up empty too. I was thinking of using some foam backer rod spiraled with some sort of glue to keep it together.

Yours is in better shape than mine for sure.
