77 W72 Replacement Flywheel and Clutch
 

Howdy, first time posting in this forum, figured i'd check it out.

Anyways, I have a 1977 Trans am w72 with a 4 speed, all original and I am looking for input on my current situation. Clutch got toasted so I ripped it all apart down there, planning on doing a t-10 rebuild as well. Looking for replacement clutch kits, and potentially a new flywheel. My flywheel has some wear but doesn't look cracked, it is the factory one I believe, 86216. Either I will get it machine or buy a new steel one if anyone here has suggestions. Its all factory so I am not looking to spend a lot which is why I wasn't looking for a new flywheel originally. Also, I know LuK has a good kit but RockAuto only shows a 10.5".

tldr; machine fw or buy new. Some good clutch kits.

Get the flywheel resurfaced. 10.5" LUK is fine. Disassemble , Clean and lube the shifter, Replace the shifter rod bushings, check condition of universal joints and the transmission mount.

Sweet, perfect response, just what I needed. Only concern I have is the bolt pattern on the LUK 10.5, factory flywheel only has the 6 holes for a larger plate, and I took an 11 inch disc off. I can’t find pressure plate mounting info on the LUK to see if it uses the larger diameter mounting holes as well, my knowledge on it was that the 10.5s had a smaller bolt pattern for the smaller pressure plates thus wouldn’t fit on the stock flywheel. Since I’m getting it machined I could just tell them to add some holes lol.

11" is the factory size those years,Luk does make a 11" clurch or atleast they used, the throw out bearing in the Luk kits plastic tho, I'd chuck that and get a metal one.

I just replaced my 77s flywheel and clutch. I used a stock replacement steel flywheel, and a Luk clutch kit with a new throw out bearing.

Smooth as silk

I used a zoom clutch kit for my 78 W72, works very good and the pedal feels like stock. Wanted to reuse the stock flywheel but shop said it it wasnt in the best shape but usable so I sold it and bought a new Hays billet.

Brought the flywheel to the shop today so we will see how that turns out, thinking about getting a zoom mu5505-1a clutch, seems people like zoom and it’s one of the cheaper ones good enough for the use case. Thanks for all the responses.
