Fuel tank coatings - inside
 

Anyone have any experience with these coatings? Any really good ones? I've also heard some horror stories of the coating coming off. Working on a non Pontiac restoration project has some very light spotty surface rust inside the gas tank and trying to decide weather to coat the inside of the tank or replace. A new tank is $600, and outside of the spotty surface rust inside, this tank is perfect.

Just give you my experience with one of our gas tanks. I had the outside painted with a very durable paint and then decided to sump the tank. I cut 3 large holes with a hole saw and installed the sump but forgot to remove the painted surface under the sump which was then emerged in the gasoline. I ended up with paint particles in my fuel filter. Morel of story, I would buy a new tank before ever coating the inside. That way you'll always know the inside is totally clean and will last a life time.

Just buy a new tank

About 20 years ago I was restoring a 69 Judge and was attempting to keep everything NM. Took the tank to a local radiator shop who vatted the tank to coated the inside. He did warned me not to use ethanol fuel as it would remove the coating.

Tanks should be less than $600 by the way.....

Yeah they should be, but they're not for a 1966 Lincoln.

When I did my 63 Tempest convert I could not find a new gas tank.I spent about a week cleaning the inside.I used a length of 5/16 chain and a lot of white vinegar.I would pour in the vinaigrette and dropped the chain in and rolled it around in it every day until the vinegar came out pretty clear.I should have rented a cement mixer and attached to the drum and got it done in no time.FWIW,Tom
