Rear differential cover magnet
 

Rear end differential cover was leaking. Pulled cover to reseal it. While cleaning the cover, magnet came loose. What should I use to reattach magnet to cover? It previously had something, but couldn't tell what it was when scraping the residual up. Thanks.

Use gray or black silicone gasket maker.

Be doubly sure to get both bonding surface’s 100% free of oil and let it set up for 8 hours.

I've had excellent results using alcohol as the last stage cleaner before using any adhesive.

What type of car? I deal with first gen GTO's and have never seen a magnet in there. Never seen any metal shavings that would even stick to a magnet. They're either clean as a whistle or blown up with chunks too big for a magnet!

75 TA. There were filings of metal on the magnet. They were hardly visible, but could be felt by touch.

My recommendation would be a 2 part adhesive such as JB weld. I've used that stuff for some pretty unusual situations in automotive applications, it's nver failed.
