Steering Column Resto ??
 

Hi,
I just picked up a Tilt for my 77 TA. It's a little rough. I searched before posting and saw an old site for "Gary's" in Texas. Anyone know of a place that does full column restorations/ rebuilds ?

I did (CJ's Rods & Machines, in Pfafftown, NC), but CJ passed within days of completing the rebuild on my '63 tilt.

I mention this now, in case you come across an outdated link or someone else makes the referral. CJ was a great guy and very knowledgeable. Sad when we lose someone like him.

If I hear of any other rebuilders, I'll follow up.

I had a guy put new tilt knuckle parts in mine who did it all the time and knew which parts to order. That was pre-internet or diagrams. Years later I pulled it down for other work and it wasn't so bad. I noted there's more rebuild parts on offer now, he was probably using a mixture of GM NOS and whatever was on offer. The other big difference now it being able to take 50 pics of different angles, just in case, to check back with. Back then it would be take a photo before, take a photo during, then wait weeks to develop film!

What needs to be done to it? If its just switches and the like its pretty simple to work on. If the tilt is wobbly then its a bit more work but not overly hard to do. Just be careful that the bearings dont explode upon dissassembly.

Heres a couple pics of mine during and after rebuild.

Formula403 is right on the money.

I have three left thumbs and was able to rebuild mine. My tilt was loose but it was still pretty easy to do.

There is a video by “three rivers wrench” on gm tilt steering columns that is really good and goes through every step.

TAKerry, what paint did you use on the collar ?

I used a vht wrinkle paint. I have a pot heater that I used first to heat the product then sprayed the paint on. After that was set I used a primer then the sem colour to match the column. I tried the sem without primer and it reacted with the vht and made a mess. I had to strip and do it over.
