Step down transformer

In our move to Portugal I have a lot of 120v tools, one of which being a couple of DeWalt cordless drills. The chargers are 120v, they offer a EU spec 240v version but none of the local stores have them in stock.

Could I not simply just wire in a step down transformer and be done?

Here is an example of one:

If so I can use most of my tools there; ie portaband, chopsaw, etc.

Just be aware that they are also 50hz. Better off with a power supply instead of transformer.

Watch your watts when you buy.

I looked at power supplys; once you get high enough to do anything useful the price really goes up or the quality goes down.

Most of the stuff I need to power is pretty simple.

My father in law did something along those lines when he moved to Peru. Unfortunately, he's losing his memory, and when I asked him about it, he didn't know what I was talking about, so I can't provide any useful information.

Time for a change - want to buzz around Europe for a decade or so...

A wirewound stepdown transformer for 50Hz will work fine. Too had about the 50 Hz, but most motored items should be fine. Brief on-time is no worry. On for >20 min and i would monitor how hot the motor get.

If you do go the transformer route be aware motors will run 83% speed…..

The only thing I would add is to be aware that some electronics won't like the 50hz power. Things like cordless tool chargers and such may not work or fail on 50hz. I would ask the manufacturer before moving on suspect items and sell the ones that you can't confirm will work prior to moving.

The charger is the main bugger in this - I am trying to buy a EU spec unit here as the DeWalt units there are all out of stock.

But I thought for motored stuff the step down will suffice.
