Myserious Bog
 

A friend in Green Bay, WI has a '64 Tri-Power GTO with a stock 389. It's a 4 speed car.

He called me this week with a story that is hard to believe, but he is ready to show me in person--he's only 45 minutes away from my home.

It began last year when he told me the car stumbled when accelerating from a stop in first gear. It also bogs momentarily when opening the end carbs at reasonable rpms. The engine also never idled smoothly. I told him the problem has to be bad accelerator pumps, so he bought them from me and installed them. This did not solve the problem.

This week, after no clues as to why the engine was performing as it was, he took three AC 220C paper air filters and replaced the white paper Chinese air cleaners he had on the engine. The bog is gone, and the engine runs like it should.

To prove to himself that the air cleaners were the problem, he put the white paper air cleaners back on. The bog re-appeared.

I know this sounds crazy, but I intend to go visit him and see for myself. I remember back in the day when some Tri-Power owners said the factory foam air filters restricted flow more than the AC 220C filters.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

We've had the foam filters and paper filters on our car at various times and never had an issue with a bog. Not sure of the source of the paper filters, but the foam filters were reproductions and eventually fell apart, not impressed with the quality of the materials. Both sets of filters came from our site's sponsor.

Source of the filters is not known, but I will figure out which ones cause the problem.

I hope you didn't get too much damage from Hur. Helene.
We were on Sanibel again during the hurricane. It was bad and flooded everywhere. Got off the island and flew home to Pa. on schedule late Friday night.
We were there for Ian also in 2022. My wife and I like going around those dates because it is NOT crowed yet. We may rethink our vacation for next year.
