Wiper Motor
 

I am working on a 1967 GTO. The wipers did not work when I got the car. I checked the switch out and found that it did not ohm out when pushing the washer pump on. I bench tested the motor and it was also bad. I purchased a new motor and switch from Ames. After a little testing everything worked except the motor seemed real week in second speed and they did not park correctly. I sent the motor back and got a replacement. It now works better in second speed but it still does not park correctly. When you turn the wipers off they park close to the bottom. But, when you turn them back on they go down about 1-2" before going up. I have tried adjusting them numerous times but cannot find a happy spot due to them going down after they are supposed to be parked. Ames tech line and the motor manufacture are both stumped. Any ideas??

There is a contact switch inside of the motor that still allows the armature to run with the switch turned off, if you turn the switch off and the wipers are still 1/2 way up on the glass.


The arms are still in motion until they are at the base of the w-shield just above the molding.

The switch is normally closed & it is wired from the motor to ground; via the ground strap; except when the wipers go horizontal it breaks contact so that the wipers do not park up high on the glass if you turn the switch off; actually your taking away the motor's ground to turn the armature.


The dash switch grounds the motor circuit and the plug-in gives the motor power (Battery + ) if the key is on.


Perhaps there is something wrong with your wiring; the flat brass ground strap on the motor casing that gos to the firewall (ground) or that internal park switch.

I might have a photo of the switch but I can't say for sure.

The "park" switch is inside of the motor casing.

You may also have the wiper motor arm (the linkage inside of the cowl) not arranged as proper. There is a keyway on the end of the drive shaft which has a bolt and/or a spring clip on it and that key-way has a flat or 2 flats on the sides for proper placement.
