455 HO......complete drive train value

Looking at a complete correct drivetrain....from 72 TA......and was wondering what current market value is?

Engine is complete and original with incorrect intake and carb...

Was professionally rebuilt just prior to being dry stored.....and will likely run...

Rear end is a 3:42 posi...and TH400..both in good working condition..

Any input is appreciated..

Something like that could have a lot of value to very few people. That's the problem. Low supply, low demand. Not the best situation for anyone.

I have the correct intake and crossover from a 72TA that I parted years ago, if needed.

What is the date code on that intake?

DANTIP 09-02-2024 11:20 AM

Drivetrain

I'd buy the PHS for the VIN. Then I'd try to find out if that car is out there. That would be your lottery hit if the drivetrain could be reunited with the car. Next, I'd share photos of casting dates and stamps, along with a good explanation of condition and work done. Documentation for the work is also helpful. Good luck!!

I don't recall off-hand, and I am out of town for the holiday. I will check later this week.

I’d put the high end at $14k depending on condition, appearance and documentation of the work.

So I guess it’d be nice for us to understand exactly what the seller is asking for that complete setup, so how about it?

72projectbird 09-02-2024 02:29 PM

I'd just take it all, order a Real Deal Steel reproduction body, and build a sweet 72TA from the ground up.

That's not a bad idea, but just purely speculating, I'd say that if this drivetrain got separated from the car, odds are the car was either not salvageable and was parted out and scrapped, or the owner has turned it into a restomod or pro touring car and has no interest in those parts whatsoever.

There was a package deal on a complete '71 455 HO drive line a few months back here although he also had the subframe and rear axle. That may give some guidance on the value. https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...ghlight=455+ho

No price has been discussed yet...

Strike year, low production numbers. I sold a 72 455 auto block for good money 10 years ago . I can't imagine what it would be worth if one was to find the body!

In today's world , if you found the car/owner , they would probably say it already still has its VIN matching engine.

poncho-mike 09-03-2024 11:50 AM

My break down would be:
- $7500 for 455HO automatic short block with heads
- $1000 for the tranny if the original
- $600 for the 3.42 rear end

I have a 1971 455HO YE automatic that was rebuilt shortly before I pulled it (years ago). The engine was dismantled for storage. I have the correct intake, carb, heads, block, and distributor for it. The dates are September or October 1970. I was offered $8K for it about a year ago. I did not have it advertised for sale. I met a guy at the 2023 GTOAA and we discussed it.

There was a 1972 YB motor somewhere in TN within the last year or so for $8K. I don't remember how much of the original equipment was there, but the motor was still intact.

It is tough to tell because the data plate did not produce a clean casting. It looks like....... I or L - 22 - 71

just happened to me last year. i tracked down the owner of a 74 ta 455SD 4 speed car and asked if was interested in buying the original engine out of his car. he called me a scammer because his had the numbers matching engine in it. i laughed and told him im no scammer, research who i am and the fact that i have pictures where i bought the engine back in the early 80's. your engine is a restamp. oh well who cares.

I had a variation of your scenario. In the early 1980s, I bought a 1970 WS engine out of a Trans Am from a garage. The owner of a 1970 Trans Am brought his car into the shop with a rod knock. The shop pulled his engine, but the TA owner decided to replace it with a 454 rather than rebuild the WS. About five or six years later, I met another person at Charlotte Autofair who was looking for a WS. He tells he has a 1970 Trans Am 4-spd with a 454 he bought out of the Charlotte NC area. His car sounds an awful lot like the car I bought the motor out of. I checked the VIN on the block and I confirm it is out of his car. I put a price on it, he thought it was way too high. He also thought he had a legal claim to the engine because he held the title to the car. He went as far as having a lawyer send me letters threatening to sue me. I told him I wasn't selling him the motor cheap, and I wouldn't sell it to him at all. I told him not to call me any more, but I'm pretty sure he had one of his buddies call looking for a WS motor after that. I was tired of dealing with him and decided I wasn't selling the motor to anybody. I don't know what he did for an engine, I probably held onto the motor for another 15 - 20 years before I sold it to someone halfway across the country.
