Carb fuel filter too long?
 

I broke down a 7042274 Q- jet off my 70 TA and found the fuel filter crushed about an 1/8" and twisted. Took some measurements and found the fitting that threads into the carb is ½” deep to top of thread. The carb where the filter lives is just under ½” deep, not including spring pocket, to the bottom of the threads. Spring crushes down to 3/16” but believe the spring pocket will except that. New filter is 1” long and without the spring installed, presents resistance for the last two turns seating the front filter fitting home on the carb. Any thoughts as to what piece is incorrect or what was done wrong during previous assembly. With the filter crushed and twisted I believe this is slowing fuel flow and presenting running issues at WOT. Thanks

Here are a couple of pictures to show the issue.

There are a few different filters, and also a few different Fuel filter inlets as well.
Many Olds had a much longer threaded fuel inlet which could use a longer filter.
Also early filters had no bleedback provision, where newer ones got a rubber 1 way valve. Be sure it can handle alcohol if you have any in your fuel.

But they didn't used to say Taiwan on them.

Also there were bronze sintered versions that would likely hold up to alcohol .

I got the kit from Cliff and he was my next move. Just figured it was something simple I didn't see. I thought there were only two size filters. Long and small, guess not. My 78 TA is a long filter. I will call Cliff tomorrow or post on his forum later today. Thanks for your thoughts.

Looks like a Cadillac fuel fitting. Some of those uses a screen instead of a paper filter.
And, the paper filter open end will not reach bottom of the Cadillac fitting.

I received a new fuel inlet nut from Cliff today and find it is .25" longer than the original. I now have room for the 1" filter and know there is more than just a long and short fuel inlet nut for the Q-Jet carbs. Thanks
