Qjet hot air choke not hooked up. # 17056263

Will the choke disengage if the choke is not attached to the hot air tube? If so, does it just take longer until engine heat gets to the element? My choke is not disengaging after engine is at normal operating temperature.

It'll take forever to disengage if it's only relying on ambient heat. They don't reproduce the tube assembly that slips into the heat crossover and bolts to the intake? Inline tube may have it for your model year. Nothing works better than the hot air choke when everything is installed correctly and adjusted to spec. The only time I tried electric, it would open too slow.

If you do convert to electric, remember to not only seal the fitting, but also the small orifice inside the choke housing from which the vacuum signal sucks in that hot air from the crossover. That orifice also serves as the bypass air on a late of later carburetors, so you may need to increase your idle speed a little bit.

Without the tube that will never get hot enough to allow the choke to drop off, that is short of an engine compartment fire God forbid.

Looks like a '72 intake in the pic and that uses a different choke set up then the 76 Q-jet if I'm not mistaken

Skidmark 09-10-2024 05:32 PM

Thanks guys. I'll add an electric choke since I don't have all the parts to make the hot air choke work. I've been educating myself on quadrajets for a couple weeks now and I got to say, for me it's like when I took algebra the first time or Spanish that I flunked in 9th grade. Having a hard time with it. I've got Cliffs book and plenty of internet time invested. Getting better, but still a novice at this point.

Cliff sells an electric conversion kit. Mine works great. I have installed on 2 other carbs, no issues.

Remind me, would that be a divorced choke?

Pretty sure mines not a divorce choke. If I understand right that would be on the intake. Not positive though.

I'll check it out. Thanks.

Divorced choke has the bimetal coil spring, under a metal cover. It bolts to the intake. You adjust it by bending the rod from the coil spring to the choke linkage on that side of the carb.

The pictured hot air choke is not a divorced choke. The hot air choke setup has a hole in the intake. A plate bolts to the intake. In has a piece of steel tubing that goes down in the intake. The tube heats up air in the choke thermostat housing., heating up the.bimetal spring behind that plastic cover, opening the choke via the linkage....

I like my electric choke. Thank You, Cliff!!!

I was psychologically scarred by Quadrajets at a young age. It gave me a phobia. LOL. However, recently through a random turn of events I overcame it and rebuilt my first Qjet which is on my car and running great right now! I have read Cliffs book and that is a must. But since I'm also a visual learner, the Quadrajet Power Youtube channel has a comprehensive set of how-to videos for rebuilding Qjets. I highly recommend it.

That's encouraging. I've watched qjet power videos as well. They rebuilt the carb I'm referencing in this thread. I have a couple good cores I hope to rebuild myself one day.

Three things that MUST happen when you rebuild your Q-jet, any year or model.

REMOVE the link and accl pump arm. Early models used a clip on the link, later models require driving the roll pin in.

REMOVE the secondary hanger and secondary metering rods. NEVER remove or install the top with the hanger in place and secondary rods hanging from it.

REMOVE the choke link coming up from the choke lever. Early models used a clip, later models a 6-32 pan head screws. The link turns 90 degrees and lifts out.

The choke bracket or choke housing is the LAST part removed and FIRST part installed during your rebuild.

The top gets installed with NOTHING hanging from it so you can put is straight down on the main casting.

For some reason folks making movies try to install the top with parts hanging from it and attempt to manipulate the choke parts in from the side at the same time. Talk about needing a couple of friends, some beer drinking buddies, and even your wifes boyfriend hangin around for some additional help....duh?. For some reason that method of assembly is regurgitated over and over on most of the videos I've seen, and the best way I know to damage the top gasket, bend power piston hanger arms, fold over secondary metering rods, and even worse DESTROY the floating secondary discs in the bottom of the main casting and ruin your carburetor!.

Anyhow, I sell a USA made electric choke conversion that actually "clocks" with the terminal down, correct release time, wide range of adjustment and works like it's supposed to. Ya, it's expensive, but about 100,000 times better than the offshore crap on Ebay for $12 with "free shipping" that "clocks" upside down and doesn't last much longer than it took me to type this.......FWIW

Cliff, thanks for chiming in. I wish you would do a video (camera looking down over work bench) of you or Ray doing a total rebuild. It would be nice to have with your book. If you have already done it. I'd like a copy. Thanks.

You're right. LOL.

It is a great book. The actual rebuilding of the carb is found on pages 70-86. I read those pages a few times and with that plus quadrajet power youtube videos it all made much more sense.

These days I stick to doing things that keep my wallet full. I'm not going to get enough "hits" and subscribers on Youtube to make videos like that worthwhile.

What I may do instead is find some drop dead gorgeous young blond, outfit here in spandex with a very revealing top, provide here only a pup tent, pocket knife, bear spray and have her camp in bear Country. That'll get about 1.5 million hits in the first 24 hours and generate 100,000 times the revenue you'd ever get from making Quadrajet videos!.......
