Tropical Storm Helene
I know it is still a ways out but most all the storm tracks have it coming right through here as a category 1 hurricane. If it hits 20-30 miles west of us it will be bad. 20-50 miles east and we should escape the worst.

I just got home from Sanibel ,Fl.
We were in a condo right on the beach. It was really scary. We had to wait until the water subsided to get off the island. We got home 2:30 this morning. They said you guys up north were going to get hit harder. I do hope you made out OK. We were also there for Ian in 2022. That was even worse. Had to drive over to FT. Lauderdale to get home from that one. |
Sarasota and Bradenton got hit hard. Siesta Key and Anna Maria, despite being 100 miles east of the center of the storm, got wrecked. Dave Holmberg down south of me had some flooding.
|
We got very lucky. The storm moved about 60 miles to the east and we didn't get any damage. We only lost power for a brief time. I feel for those that got hit.
|
It FINALLY stopped raining here early this morning. Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina have been hit hard by flooding. Are there any PY members in that area?

Here in SW Ohio, winds in excess of 60mph managed to flip my cow shed (a 7x7x12 three sided structure on 4x4 skids) about 25 feet, stuffed it onto a fence, then another gust flipped it into my back yard, and the 3rd one ripped the roof and siding off. Considering all the damage elsewhere and places nearby without power, I'd say I was one of the more fortunate ones.
My neighbor's security cam caught it all. Looked like part of the twister movie. |
Upstate SC was hit hard, but nothing like the mountains of NC and TN. Our area northern Greenville County , SC looks like a war zone with all the downed trees, and power lines as well as structure damage. Lines are long at gas stations and grocery stores as we have been without power since Friday morning (9/27/24). Duke Power anticipates that most will have power by Friday 10/4/24 (accessible areas).
All in all, we were blessed in SC as compared to NC and TN. Please pray for all impacted by this storm. There are towns in NC that were basically washed away. |
NE Tennessee got hammered- bridges taken out will probably be the worse damage. Erwin TN lost bridges on I-26, and Asheville NC is cut off with no open roads. TVA is flying helo's daily to assess several dams that were near failure. Total loss of life won't be known for quite awhile

Huntsvile AL area got next to nuthin. NC geez.

It has been a rough time for many people. Hopefully most of them are ok. |
Does anyone know if BVZ is in the area of the destruction?
Not real sure where he lives, thought it might be closer to Charlotte or Greensboro maybe? ( Instead of the main destruction area) Hoping for the best for all the people in the path. :( |

The news reported today that between the rain that was associated with the front that came through before Helene and the rain associated with her there was 40 trillion gallons of water that fell over the south. If it all fell in N. Carolina it would have covered the entire state under 3.5 feet of rain. That was enough water to fill Lake Tahoe or flow 748000 gallons a second over Niagara Falls for 619 days!
We really dodged a big bullet where I live! The storm was supposed to come right over us but veered to the east by about 60 miles. And that made all the difference. We got 6 to 8 inches of rain but no wind to speak of. |
I got lucky that the worst of it missed me. Everything west of I-77 is closed. Part of I-40 was taken out as well as I-26. Roads are completely gone in some areas and hundreds of people are still stuck in what used to be some towns. Chimney Rock and Banner Elk are just a couple of many small towns that were completely wiped out. It's so bad some places may never recover from the storm.

I know that Asheville suffered damage, but what about the Biltmore mansion?
|
Has anyone heard from 4004spd ? (Steve Barr)
I know he is in NC, but not sure where? |
