Window handle removal

I put a new convertible top on and now have to readjust my windows on my 72 Lemans. The problem on my rear passenger side quarter window crank is, there is no push clearance to see the clip to remove handle. I need to get that interior panel off to get to the guts. Anyone have an idea?

Do you have the tool to remove the clip?
Typically the clip is oriented with the open end aligned with the handle (correct me if I'm wrong people). That way you don't have to see the clip to know where the open side is, just put in the tool aligned with the arm of the handle and pop off the clip ... and hope you can find it.

Dataway is correct. Slide the tool between the base of the handle and the plastic washer from the handle end. If nobody screwed up the installation of the clip it will pop right out.

I do have the tool and have the clip on correctly. Here is the issue. When I installed new handles and plastic washers, the plastic washers had a raised center like a hat. But, for some reason that also covers the clip. I had to actually trim an opening or slot so the clip would fit with the washer in place. My driver side I had enough push on my panel where I used an exacto knife to cut a slice down washer to pull it out. I don't see enough push on passenger side to do the same. I'm thinking I may have to drill several holes in handle around perimeter to break it off to get washer and clip off. I'm leaving the washers off when I put back on.

Just keep jamming that clip removal tool in there....just make sure the tool is between the steel handle and the plastic washer....and try from

Both directions.

You shouldn’t have to go to extremes to remove the handle. I’ve been taking them off for 50+ years

Sounds like the plastic washer might be facing the wrong direction.

^^^ yep.

I got it off. I had to slice and dice the plastic washer to get good access to the clip.

dataway 10-12-2024 02:23 PM

Yep, if the washer is on the wrong way it blocks access to the clip.

The raised part of the plastic washer goes into the hole in the door panel.

Yes, I had the washer on correctly.
