1971 455 ho car
 

Bought this one last week. Been sitting since 1974. One family owned. Was 30 miles from the dealership. It's rough and needs a lot. Still trying to find all the parts. Black car ordered to run fast. Manual brakes, manual steering, no console and only a 8 track as convenience options. Has to be very few optioned like this one. It's rough but we'll fix it.

Built to go fast, but ordered with an 8 track and heavy ass honeycomb wheels.

Parked since 74? They weren't going fast for long lol

It makes me wonder how many people in 1971 knew Honeycomb wheels were heavy? They were pretty out of the norm for wheels that were available back in 71 and they definitely made a statement.

Other than Porsche I don't remember any other manufacturers with a wheel design that was so different.

It's not that unusual to see a car taken off the road around 1974 - 1976. The Arab Oil Embargo hit in late 1993, causing fuel prices to triple or more. Gas prices stayed elevated for years.

My blue 1971 T/A was taken off the road around 1976 because the lady owner was driving 50 miles round tip to work and back. Trade-in values for musclecars were in the basement, so a lot of people just kept them. The previous owner said that after she made the last payment on it, she dropped insurance and parked it, then bought an economy car. I bought the T/A in 1982 with about 80K miles on it.

The mother of one of my good friends bought a loaded up 1969 GP SJ. It was an awesome car, dark blue with black interior. We cruised around it in the mid-1970s. It was parked outside in a field around 1975 or 1976. I bought it for parts in the mid-1990s.

I had an extremely nice 1964 Buick Riviera dual quad 425 I bought really cheap in 1975. I drove it about three years, finally had to stop driving it because it got horrible gas mileage.

Anyway, with gas prices averaging around $.30 per gallon, then tripling or more, a lot of people parked their muscle cars and opted for something cheaper. I remember those times well. My dad had a dealer's license and we went to auto auctions on a regular basis. Pintos and Vegas were selling for as much money as an early Trans Am. My first car I bought on my own over the winter of 1974 was a 1968 Torino GT 390 4-spd convertible, it set me back less than $300 running and driving with decent tires.

Heavy duty radiator might mean a performance axle option, and CG is the code for 3.73 posi. Have you checked to see what rear end is in the car?

The trim tag has 64 stamped in it. Anyone know what for?

Hope you locate the original motor. That car will be very unique and valuable when you get it done.

How could a FB be built with an 8 track and no console?

The 8 track sat on a little sheet metal pedestal when there wasn't a console.

Have removed several of the stamped steel floor mount brackets & plastic trim pieces over the years. Believe the plastic trim cover has been reproduced. None of my Pontiacs originally came with 8 track players & have been trading off several of of the ones I have.

the 64 stamped into the cowl tag is for the Body Buck, the jig that Fisher Body used at the Norwood plant to assemble the unibody.

I’m pretty sure I have one of the plastic Trim pieces that covers the floor bracket for the 8 trak mount

exactly how i came to by my first case for $150, base 1971 firebird in 1979, co-worker of my dads had parked it several years from like 1976 onward, maintianig the tags mainly for short trips, he carpooled w/my dad to work as gas was so expensive...he complained dealers wouldn't give him anything for it...so he finally let me buy it for $150...

Had to correct it. I remember the $0.75/0.80/gallon gas prices.
