Sad deal.... RIP

A great racer who lost both of his sons to tragedy. He was recently awarded a win here locally at Bowman Gray stadium from a NASCAR race way back in 1971. Ironically, NASCAR will be returning to Bowman Gray in February for The Clash.

As a kid I listened to MRN radio coverage of the races, and I always pulled for Bobby and the red and gold Coca Cola Chevy to beat Petty.

Got to see Bobby win in Talladega in 1979. Went with a friend who worked in the pit crew for driver Baxter Price.

Met Bobby over thirty years ago; he was one of a kind.

I was fortunate enough to meet him a few times over the years .

One year we were coming back from Atlanta Dragway NHRA Southern Nationals and the Talladega Race was the same weekend. He was pumping gas at a Flying J truckstop near Temple GA. I talked to him inside the truckstop. My friend didn't beleive that was him at first.
He was a real nice guy and took time to talk.

RIP

There were few that had the determination to drive like Bobby did. One of my favorite quotes of his was after the fight at the 79 Daytona 500. When asked afterwards he said about Cale "His nose hit my fist ". Very few of the old drivers remain. He was one of the best. R.I.P. Bobby

Our local dirt track paid him for an appearance one night. He raced a local racers car in the late model division.

During the heat race and the engine expired, which sidelined the car for the night. Bobby took all of his appearance money and gave it to the owner of the car. It was rumored to be $5,000. He sat out the rest of the night in the stands signing autographs and shooting the breeze with fans.

Very nice man, no Hollywood attitude from him whatsoever, just a regular guy. You have to remember he was doing this for free at this point because he donated the money from his appearance to the car owner. I'll always remember how cordial, and down to earth he was. He sat in the stands for likely 3 hours interacting with the crowd, didn't rush off as soon as he could have.
