Winter beater
 

For anyone who doubts that I use my '67 Falcon all winter...

I used to love my winter beaters.
Only have three requirements, starts every time in the winter, heater works great, and goes good with a set of studded tires on the back.
For me the best over the years was a 1972 Ford Maverick.

That’s a nice Falcon. My favorite beater was a 1993 Cavalier. It got me to work (snow & ice) when nothing else was rolling. Funny story….several techs called out because they “couldn’t get to work because of snow “. One had a new 4x4 pickup but both owned them. I told both of the techs that I was driving to their house to pick them up for work in my Cavalier. They both said…”uhhhh, let me try again”. They did show up. I suppose they felt embarrassed that I drove in to work 25+ miles in 12 inches of snow and they “couldn’t” in their respective 4x4 trucks.

Jack isn't kidding either! Years ago I drove from Dayton, OH with 2 Boss Bird aluminum engine blocks. The plan was to meet Jack in Erie, PA. (Half way from his NY shop). Blinding snow storm. Here comes Jack in that very same Falcon to get my blocks. Loaded them in the trunk and away he went with probably slightly better traction on the way home.

It's not just your Falcon, it's every other rwd car during the time was able to somehow make it through. In my fifty plus years of driving, I've never been stranded or required a tow, all with rear drive vehicles. And I have spent most of my adult life in Kansas or Missouri.

One thing I like about the Falcon is the C4 automatic that at a stop goes into second by shifting to '2', which makes it easier to not spin the tires when starting to move.

I had a 68 Ford Wagon with an FMX (Cast Iron 3 Spd Automatic) that had second gear starts. Got me through Chicago and Maine winters. Pretty sure all the Ford three speed autos had that feature.

Our 71 Maverick was pathetic in the snow compared to the 73 Oldsmobile Toronado we had. I saw mom drive through 2 foot snow plow berms in that big Olds 455 beast numerous times. Living in North Idaho it was the winter car to have. I'd put it up against most modern SUV's especially when the snow gets deep. The Toronado didn't get driven much the summer as it was definitely a gas guzzler compared to the 200 six in the Maverick.

My current winter beaters. The Blazer being lowered and on leaf springs isn't as capable as the Burban in the snow.

Yep, back in the day most cars were RWD, and poor in the snow. I had a '63 Dodge Dart which was really light in the rear. My wife had a '65 Mustang and later a '73 mustang, all terrible in the snow.

Later on we had a '85 Toro, it was a tank, would get thru the snow with no issue. They had FWD with a full cast iron differential up front adding to the traction.

I know a guy here who has one of the AMX Sprints that he swapped the 304 for a 401. With a quiet exhaust it's a real sleeper running 12.00's most days. One of my favorite 1980's cars.

The photo isn't his car but looks similar with his having more patina.

It was great...had a few of them but the sx4 was the rarest. Tons of torque traction when it was snowing but a turd when it wasn't.

The amx anything are so nice if I wasn't married to Pontiac lol
