Fixing a console crack

1 Attachment(s)
Hi - my 77 Trans Am console has developed a sizable crack.

How have folks dealt with repairing them? I was looking at a vinyl repair like this one on Amazon, but wasn’t sure that was the best option.

The worse part of trying to "repair" a crack is matching the color. If it is an off color it will be very tough. After you are done the hole will be filled but it will still be noticeable.

Any filler you guys recommend for this purpose? Or do you think the vinyl repair kit is a decent option. Understood that the color match is going to be tough.

before you try to repair the top soft surface;
Look at the underside, and address that

I have tried in the past to repair my original console (and although I believe 1970 consoles used a different plastic), I was never able to find a fix that stayed on...

If the backing is broken, and you can fix that, then maybe go to an ineterior shop that specializes in this stuff - I've seen some incredible vinyl and leather repairs.

Thanks! I may get some quotes to repair it. Unfortunately it’s not in a good area to cover it with a decal or something else.

I’ve got a pseudo 2 tone interior going by being lazy and not painting the de facto black replacement lower door panels and lower rear panels. I could buy a new console and also leave it black I guess but that may look pretty dumb :-)

if your console might cost too much to repair, a reputable shop should be able to do a colour match to a replacement console.

Look for a nice one, they’re still out there. I found 2 , they aren’t cheap, If you want cheap, get a repop. One I found was from a 77 in buckskin, it was perfect, it went in a Rockford files Firebird. It didn’t need to be sprayed it was so perfect. You gotta ask around, go to the swaps.

Thanks. I have a feeling the repair will cost more than the $400 repop console (the current one that cracked is a repop console already - not a great sign it cracked in less than 5000 miles).

Not a lot of swaps out here in NorCal or folks with Trans Ams here but will keep an eye out.

Oregon isn't too far - the PDX swap meet is likely closer to you than me!

Just saying...

OH, and there are members here who probably have anything you need AND will be going to the Portland swap meet.
