Front and Rear Springs for a 1974 GP
 

I recently purchased a 1974 Grand Prix Model J with front and rear factory sway bars and have it stored for the winter. When I brought it home I noticed the springs seem soft and worn out and suspect I will need to replace them when I get it out in the spring. I noticed looking for springs that it is easy to find a variable-rate rear, almost impossible to find a standard rear spring (constant rate) and just as hard to find a front spring for a car with factory A/C! OPGI has the constant rate rear, and Rock Auto has the front (Husky Brand) for A/C cars.

What I would like to know is who has experience with any of these on their 73-77 and is it good or bad. I have used variable rate coils on several vehicles in the past, station wagons I was using for hauling both a trailer and stuff packed in the back. Would that be a good choice for a non-daily driver or would I be better off with a constant rate spring? Are the springs sold through OPGI any good? Anyone have any experience with Husky Springs, if so are they any good? Thank you in advance. Tom

Call Eaton Detroit Spring and talk to them about what your interested in for a stance and ride. You can find their contact info on the internet. I purchased rear springs for my 1963 Grand Prix and was very happy with the car and how it sat. That’s all they do is springs and they are easy to work with.

I agree with Green Elephant, Detroit Eaton spring was probably the original supplier for the springs on your car, they still have all the blue prints for all the springs they provided GM back in the day. They have provided my a couple of sets of odd ball Pontiac springs in the past, and I have been very happy with the resaults.

I had issues with Moog springs I purchased for a 1969 GP 10 years ago, the rear springs were OK and the front needed to be cut one full coil to get the front to sit right. I wanted something better than "one size fits all" and from the looks of their site they will be a better choice. Tom
