Powder coat wheel
Has anyone powder coated Rally II wheels? I am thinking about having my '72 T/A KR wheels powder coated. I am afraid that the powder coating will fill in the "KR" and the date stamps etc. Is this something I should be concerned with?
I realize powder coating these might be frowned upon... but.. My car is a driver... not a points judged show car and the KR's are not original to the car. |

Not if they do it right. And depending on how deep the stamp is.
From my 68. When I had the spare done they applied to much and the stamp was covered |

I had the original Rally 2’s to my 74 GTO powder coated. They don’t look 100% correct but I think they’ll look nice on the car. I can still see the codes fine on the wheels. Can take a picture of the code/date if needed.

I also just had the original 15X6 Plain wheels from my 71 Catalina powder coated, I can still read the original codes just fine. I also can post some pictures later today. I also do not think they look 100% original but they should look good with the dog dish caps on them.

Did they powder the dark gray too? |
Try cerakote if you want something that is not thick like powder coating and will last forever and not cover the stamps.

Had a few sets of Rally IIs powdercoated. Durable, but more durable with the gloss.
Satin finish keeps the stamping quite readable. Gloss not so much. |
The seam doesn't come out right. Powder wants to bridge and fill it. Also any surface rust in the seam will blister the powder eventually.

My wheels are currently rattle canned right now.. :(

I have had many Rallye Wheels powder coated and the codes and letters are clearly visible. Standard procedure is powder coat wheel silver then mask and paint the gray.

The wheels from the factory are 3 different colors. If you are trying to match original coloring, it's a waste to power coat.
