Steering wheel installation-67 gto:
 

Trying to install my steering wheel. Service manual shows using two springs. You put the first spring onto the shaft, then the turn signal cancel cam, then the second spring, then the steering wheel, washer and nut, then the horn button. I don't think this is right, unless I'm misinterpreting the manual. There is not enough room on the shaft for two springs.
I only have one spring. I first put the spring on the shaft, then the turn signal cancel cam, then the steering wheel, then the washer and nut, then the horn button. I tried to make sure the horn works but there is no spring action to the horn button. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I know for non-tilt columns, the canceling cam goes first, then spring. Maybe tilt is opposite?

Mine is a tilt column.

Make sure you have the correct cancelling cam for your Tilt Column and particular steering wheel to make it fit.

Non_Tilt is 9787615 ( stamped 9787616 )
Tilt is 9788414 ( stamped 9788415 )

Same part number and stamping on the cancelling cam makes searching for the correct part a little confusing.

In '68, There were new part numbers and stampings.

Non_Tilt is 399262 ( stamped 399296)
Tilt is 399294 ( stamped 399297 )

The 67 and 68 cancelling can be interchanged for the same application.

AMC came out with 3194349 which can be used in place of 399294 and 9788414 Tilt wood wheel applications. The plunger and horn spring in retained by the brass ring and no longer needs a retainer due to the way it's molded.I bought one for my tilt column and wood wheel 978and compared it with the original and it's a match.

Ames M141FD is like the AMC 3194349 but it's for non-tilt wood wheel applications

I meant to say the horn button goes on after the steering wheel, then the washer,nut and Pontiac cap. Anyway I figured out my problem, the horn button cutouts were not aligned with the spokes on the wheel. Everything is good now.
I did have the correct cancel cam for the tilt column. Part # 9788415.
