New Engine Combo for 1978 S/E

Wondering what you guys think about the following combination for an upgrade to one of my 1978 S/E T/A’s. I will be using Items I have instead of going out to purchase new aftermarket parts.

Current combo – 406 CID W72 block, Edelbrock performer intake, XE 274H-10 cam, Forged pistons, forged Eagle H-beam rods, Stock crank, 6X#4heads with port match and cleanup of bowls, 9.45 to 1 compression, D port Doug’s headers. Horsepower is 370 -380.

New combo – same 406 CID W72 block, 234 factory intake manifold, Butler RA IV roller cam. Same rods, pistons & crank. RAII heads, round port Doug’s headers, 10.25 to 1 compression.

Cam specs – https://butlerperformance.com/i-3164...tegory:1234841

Estimated HP 450.

Let’s hear it.

Thanks in advance.

Nice! I was shooting for that same 450-ishs number. 406 (original block), W72, 4-speed Mods: Edelbrock D-port 72 CC heads, Edelbrock Performer manifold, Butler/Comp SP SP Billet Roller Cam 282/288, 230/236, .510/.521, 114LS Tremec 5-speed, Ram Air D-ports, Terminator X FI.

I didn't want headers even if it cost me some HP. But those Ram Air manifolds are like shorties. And it sounds great!

Same car; similar mods

I have pretty much the same car. Been in storage since 1991. All stock. 4 speed. Just starting to work on it, getting it back in shape. It was running fine when I parked it in 1991 in that storage unit. Got a new AJet Carb, the radiator redone a good shop; looks new. Getting the hi flow water pump. Got the Butler 068 roller cam & lifter kit. Getting the Edelbrock 61595 heads, 72cc Butler said to get. Getting the performer manifold. Got a new TSP distibutor and coil but my mechanic swears the Pontiac HEI is so good and dont want to use the distributor. Just putting new cap wires and stuff on it.

Butler said the stock w72 400 block is good with this. Won't break a rod I mean and the compression is good with stock block with 72cc heads.

Got the rear disc kit and booster/master/valve from Pirate jacks w red caliper s of course. Got the CPP front disc kit with the wilwoods. New BF Goodrichs. Keeping my ws6 snowflakes. Moog tierods idler arm & ball joints. Poly bushings for everything. KYB shocks.

I just need to know is Butler right about the 72cc heads? And is the stock distributor really that great like my mechanic says? And what headers or exhaust manifold? Car is a 78 T/A Gold ws6 w72 4speed ttops all options.

I'd be very surprised if you didn't make 450HP. My combo is a 350/413 stroker with Comp XE276HR cam, 6X-4 heads, 9.34 CR, Hedman headers and it pulled 453 HP@5600 with a Torker-I intake and 800cfm Q-Jet.

Is this a manual or auto car?
