Oil filter with bypass
Looking and can't find any oil filters with built in bypass, found 1 fram-hp5 but not sure if quality is any good due to the rumors of Fram filters, also curios if wix 51258 has one or not. Thanks in advance
|
I .. THINK .. the Fram HP line is better built than regulars..
With the amount of offshoring today I don't trust anything but I have to buy something so I buy the higher price point of any given filter in hope of getting a product that meets minimal standards |
No bypass valve on the 1258 WIX filter according to the specs. on fleet filter.com. It does have an anti-drainback valve.

"With the amount of offshoring today I don't trust anything"
Valid issue today. Fwiw, many years ago when racing we used a HP2 racing filter. As research found, at least back then, their racing filter was a different construction than the regular off the shelf Fram filter. . |
Pontiacs have a bypass in the oil filter engine adapter.. Napa are WIX filters IIRC.
|
I used HP2 s forever in my SDs then couldnt find them, never a problem. A friend used HP2s in his dirt track RAV. I guess now there different. I'm thinking going to Baldwin this year.

Fram HP Series Oil Filters HP2
For maximum performance and durability on the street or at the track, trust Fram HP Series oil filters. They offer twice the oil flow rate and four times the dirt-holding capacity of standard oil filters. Their extra-thick steel cans and heavier gauge tapping plates are designed to withstand the high pressures and flexing caused by demanding driving conditions. Tough steel end caps hold a spiral-shaped center tube to offer more durability and protection against collapse. Fram HP Series oil filters are compatible with all oil types and have been optimized for racing and high performance street cars. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...Acm9Z06wZL1kD_ . |
From the RockAuto website
High Performance; Spin-on
FRAM Racing® Filters are optimized for both racing and high-performance street cars, and are compatible with all oil types. Feel confident knowing a heavy-gauge tapping plate and an extra-thick steel can will withstand the high pressure flexing caused by demanding driving conditions. A spiral-shaped center tube provides protection against collapse, and tough steel end caps add even more durability. A screen-over 22psi filter bypass valve provides additional protection against larger contaminants. Features & Benefits: Low-restriction racing media designed for high oil flow. The media features 94% efficiency @20 microns for excellent engine protection. Silicone anti-drain back valve. Recommended maximum oil flow: 10-18gpm, depending on model. Maximum burst pressure: 350-500psi, depending on model. Maximum operating pressure: 200psi on all models. |
I just now noticed the Summit site stated "not available".
My apologies for any confusion caused. . |
Why plug Pontiac's original bypass in the filter adapter and then use a filter with bypass???
|
Agree 100% with the above!
Only if you plug the oil bypass in the oil filter adapter do you then need a filter with a bypass. If you run a remote filter plumbed off the block without the oil filter adapter then you need a filter with a bypass. But this brings up a few very important questions in my mind that I have not seen discussed here. 1) Are you thinking the factory did not know what they where doing when the put a bypass in the oil filter adapter ? 2) Do you think that the factory did not research the bypass volume / flow rate needed to keep the motor alive during bypass conditions, so you think you know more then the factory engineers in regards to this system? 3) What makes you think that a filter with a bypass designed for another totally different motor can match the needed flow rate that Pontiac had in the stock adapter bypass? When I looked into the details of the remote set up I used I went with two 2 Qt filters. While the ones I used did have a bypass the flow rate of the two big filters ment that the bypasses never opened even with cold oil as long as it was not straight 50w and the air temperature was above 40 degrees . |
Yes I'm running relocated oil filter and cooler.Lines are attached directly to tapped block. So I need a bypass style filter.Mainly for cold start ups and less wear on the composite distributor gear.

Moroso filters come in a number of configs.
. |
Some choose to block the bypass on the OE adapter, and don't run a bypass filter. That's the point, is to ensure everything goes through the filter.
It has drawbacks, no bypass, as well as remote filter setups. As long as you are aware of the potential issues, and keep an eye on it, then there usually isn't a need for a bypass. . |

K&n is showing to have a bypass,is this correct?
|
Where it’s mounted do you have the room for a 1 Qt size filter?
The typical Chrysler / Ford 1Qt filters have a bypass in them but they still require a in engine bypass because they still can not handle high rpm flow volume. |
OK k&n does not have bypass, but I just called oriellys for a fram hp5 and they crosses it over to a wix 51244 which has bypass and is 5 1/2" tall
