looking at 67 firebird, what to watch for?
 

Hi, i am going to look at a 67 firebird this weekend. I've never owned a car like this of this era...For you knowledgeable people what should i look at or pay attention too? the car was fully restored about 20 years ago, a lady bought it and put maybe 2000miles on it. It sleeps on a lift in her garage most of the time.
The car has a 350, i forgot to ask if it was a fuel injected or carb.

Rust.. body filler... rust repairs...

a 350 pontiac or 350 chevy? Im not a purist so Im not judging, but right off the bat either way its not original. It would have been a 326/400 or Straight 6 originally. 350 pontiacs weren't a thing in 67.

If the restoration is 20 years old its likely not FI, as that was much less common then than now. If its not being portrayed as some crazy rare collector item and is just a reasonably priced classic driver I wouldn't be overly critical.

Look at the floor pans, rockers, quarters, and around the rear window channel for obvious rust. Look for bubbling or cracking body filler.

If you are happy with the look, and it doesn't seem to be a rust bucket then buy it. All the other stuff is the fun stuff. Even if you find you don't like the engine build a better one. Dont like the wheels buy new ones. Just don't get yourself trapped in paint and body hell. Live with small imperfections if it has them

OK thanks for that info. She said it had a 350 so i just assumed it got swapped in at some time. I will be getting more info and keeping you posted.

Could be a 455, and she gave up street racing because of the tickets.

Bring someone who knows what to look for. Maybe someone on this site lives near you.

I remember when I was 19 and bot a '69 bird from a local frenchman. I immediately fell for the price and good looks.

I didn't know what to look for and what a basket case lol which I found out the hard way over the years.

Bondo, 350 chebby downgrade, paint and bodywork wouldn't ever be worth it for a plain jane 350 FB if I was to whore out the work.

Take lots of pictures if you aren't sure and post them on here. The guys here have hawk-eyes and have restored these cars over and over

Take it to a local mechanic and put it on a lift - if the owner squawks then move on. If he has nothing to hide he will be upfront on what it needs.

There are tons of cars out there for sale so you can afford to be choosy too.

You can ask her if she has the PHS documents to go with it.
