Retiring (again)
 

I alluded to this in some other threads but now it is official: I will be retiring from the automotive industry (this time I mean it).

Nissan has informed me that my contract will not be renewed effective 5/1/2025. My last day will be 4/30/2025. I was already planning to be done 8/29/2025 so this just pulls it ahead a bit.

If my “pre-retirement practice days” (aka “vacation days”) are any indication it appears my time will be spent napping, eating and ignoring lingering projects in the house and garage. I really should be putting the Chevelle back together after a big build winter and I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodel that needs finishing up. After that we'll see. My wife claims she can support me in the manner to which I have become accustomed but I don't think she really knows how expensive car parts are.

This might be a good time to step up my involvement in the Pontiac clubs (Widetrackers Chapter, and Motor City Chapter of POCI) and maybe the Pontiac Museum in Pontiac MI.

Final tally is 39 years 7 months at GM and a couple days shy of 6 years at Nissan, for those keeping score. This will be my longest break since the summer between my junior and senior years of high school.

Congrats on your new found freedom, now the hard work of pleasing yourself rather than an employer begins.

If you really want to keep yourself busy, my advice is to buy an old farmhouse, and try to do everything yourself, never a day goes by that I don't think about all the things that need done here. The house is also a huge diversion to keep me out of the garage where I have projects waiting as well, and a way to spend any extra money I need to burn..........;)

I retired from full time employment in February of 2018.

Had a part time retirement gig through Dec 31st of last year. I was planning to not work at all anymore. But at the last minute, I did tell my old boss that if NEEDED, he could call. So far this year I've worked 1 day.

I have given him dates (about 7 different weeks) that I would NOT be available.

Right now, there are 2 more days this year (early September) that I committed to.

I'm worried that I might have overextended myself....

Enjoy the change Kieth, but keep yourself busy. I've told my company 6-30-27 will be the last, then it's on to my sideline of custom woodworking, more road time with the Firebird, and definitely an alumni day trip back to Flint. GMI '78 So, I've got a few years on you considering I started at Lordstown as a Co-op 6-17-73!

Congratulations! My guess is you will never run out of things and projects to do. I can't believe it's been 12 years since I was forced into early retirement at my job. I was rehired 3 years later at a much lower pay and # of hours. Still working 12 hours a week, which is nothing compared to the 70 Hr. average prior. Enjoy working for yourself for a change. You will love it.

Congratulations. Try to settle in on some sort of daily routine. I ignored that sage advice and the years are just slipping by with not enough getting done.

That's too bad Nissan is letting you go. It seems like they might have some interesting things coming up, with the new CEO talking about a next gen GTR and possibly bringing back the Silvia!

Congrats Keith and welcome to the club, but don't blink. I blinked twice and now it's been over 10 yrs. since I pulled the plug in '14!

Congrat's .Almost 2 years here and enjoying it. Everything is on my schedule. Usually 10 am before I think about doing anything, LOL.
Still have lots of House projects to do, but they aren't going anywhere too fast.

If at first you don't succeed ..,.. Retire again.

Don't forget to get in at least 1 nap per day-

I haven't ever worked so hard as I have since I retired.
Last two days I spent out in a field in the TN sun planting 200 red wine grape vines.

Bee hives get here in a couple of weeks, irrigation and trellis for the vines has to be put in, on going erosion projects, fruit trees to be planted.

Tons of time needed on the excavator and mowers (but I don't consider that work).

I've given up thinking I am able to mentally retire. I can at least work for myself which gives me great joy, I basically have to build/produce or die, I know no other way.

But when I go on vacation I usually REALLY enjoy myself.
