64 Lemans trunk lock retainer
 

Were there two types of trunk lock retainers for 64? I removed one yesterday from my trunk lid and it is curved. i also have one bagged and labeled that is straight. The straight style is what I see reproduced for 64-65.

Yes there were two types, I have seen both styles in my parts collection.

We just disassembled the trunk lock assy. on our '64 GTO. Turning the key was very difficult---to the point that we were afraid the key would break.

We determined. that the problem was the retainer referred to in this thread. If I tighten the screws that hold the retainer in place, the problem occurs. The solution was to just snug the screws, mildly compressing the rubber gasket. When left like this, all is well. If I had known this in advance, no disassembly would have been necessary.

The retainer we have is the curved one. I assume it got bent at some time, causing the problem. This is one of the many areas we need to be careful, since most all of the parts for this trunk lock assy. are not available.

My '64 also has the curved type. It needs a gasket, and I have not been able to locate one. What material is recommended to fab one?

The gasket is rubber-about .060” thick. It looks like rubber from an inner tube. Cut a rectangle the same dimensions as the retainer portion that contacts the trunk lid. Poke two holes for the screws and you’re set. Simple to make.

Dick, that is a great tip concerning loosening the screws (the gasket solution is also a great tip).

My key is also extremely hard to turn which has also made me fearful of snapping the key.

I will give your solution a shot, hopefully it will solve my issue same as it did for you.
