Want cheap 14” steel wheel that fits 1966 Tempest
 

I’m near San Diego, and don’t want to pay much for shipping.
14x6 or 14x7
5 on 4.75” bolt pattern
Must fit over factory disk brakes
3 1/4” - 4 1/4” backspace

I only need one

I would think that one of the local auto salvage yards in the San Diego area would be worth a try. Literally millions of RWD Malibus, LeMans, Skylarks, Cutlass', Grand Prixs and Monte Carlos, Camaros and Firebirds were built with 14" 5x4.75 bolt pattern wheels.

I know I could go to any salvage yard around here and get a 14x6 (14x7's would be harder to locate) and pay less than the cost of shipping one.

I was looking for the same thing 14" wheels to put on my 64 for a disc brake conversion.. I discovered my old 92 GMC Sonoma was running on 14" wheels. My spinner hubcaps fit fine and my 11" disc brake setup fits. Before that I was looking all over for 14" wheels. There were tough to find. Now I'm looking for other used wheel for my 92. That is a much easier.

I’ve been to the local wrecking yards for my modern cars, and they don’t seem to have vehicles older than 2000. They must have lots of fast turnover. I should call and ask them though, maybe they have a stockpile of old wheels, or they may know of some newer wheels that will fit (like the 1992 truck that Rohrt suggested)

The most common disc brake changeover used on '64-72 A-body's is the '69-72 single piston caliper factory disc swap. That factory setup, have put together & sold over a 140 changeovers. It is basically what the chinese cheap disc changeovers are patterned off of, sometimes with no quality fit issues.

For 1969 GM models all 14x6 wheels were designed to fit both drum & disc A-bodys. As one examines 14x6 standard steel wheels from '69-77 GM A-bodys, they don't differ much in design. The back space from the hub mtg area to the back of the rim will typically measure in the 4 5/16 - 4 3/8" range.

Once GM began building the downsized '78 model A body (eventual G-body), the 14" wheel design changed. On a 14x6 standard steel wheel like an '81 model IL coded 14x6, the back space will measure 3 9/16". Basically that design makes the later 14x6 a zero offset wheel. Easy to spot visually. As far as S10's go, when introduced in '82 they used suspension pieces from the G-body parts bin. Going down the base S10 14" wheel route, I'd definitely measure backspace.

Where does this leave us? Not all 14x6 GM 4 3/4 bolt oattern steel wheels are even closely the same. IF one is trying to match what they have in a 14x6 steel wheel, one really need to note what one has currently has on the vehicle or for the vehicle.

Having quickly ID'ed by two letter code (or examined by quick glance) literally 10's of thousands of GM 14" steel wheels, can relay all above. Also, having sourced parts from multiple 100's of Auto salvages & old school wheel & tire shops, the days of going through the phone book, or a quick Internet listing, LOL, of Auto Salvages for a large metro are & finding a mainstream yard that actually has '69-77 usage 14x6 gm wheels, very slim chance of success. Unless the yard is a specialty yard or a very long time yard that next to never crushes, just not that simple a find. Even old school long time tire & wheel shops that have only sold through point of sale means, eventually, the owners scrap certain stock.

The salvage yards in San Diego were all by Brown Field near the border. The city has been buying out the yards to make room for development and Its gotten to the point where there is only a small handful on Energy Way in Chula Vista.

With that being said there is a yard that specializes in GM up in East LA's San Gabriel Valley. They advertise primarily on Craigslist.

Facebook Mktplace & Craig's ought to reveal numerous '69-72 Cutlass guys selling parts. Most such sellers are either clearing out parts or tearing down a partscar. May be a great nearby avenue to find standard 14x6 steel wheels from those years!

If the Cutlass or even a Buick Skylark from those years was factory V8 car, & the vast majority were, 14x6's were the standard issue wheels. In Pontiac ranks, '69-72 model base 6 cyl Tempest/T-37/LeMans came with 14x5's.

Have close to twenty (20) 14 x 6's remaining. Various backspaces and codes. Most all are southern NM desert quality.

You guys know a lot! Thanks for all the help. I was in a bit of a hurry because I wanted to take the family for a cruise in the car on Father’s Day, so on Saturday I bought an old spare tire on a Chevy rally wheel from a 1968 Camero for $50. I found it on OfferUp about 30 miles away. It’s 14x6, 5 on 4.75” bolt pattern. The backspace measures 4 3/8”, and it will clear the disk brakes. I’m not sure if it will accept Mr Pontiac wheel covers, but I will use it as my spare, so I don’t care.
So I’m back on the road, and I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a more appropriate steel wheel, or a deal on a set of 14” Pontiac Rally 1 wheels.
