Ok don't hate me I know cam questions a beat to death here but I'm getting ready to order one.

66 lemans
Muncie M20
3.36 rear gear but likely to go lower when I eventually swap to a tkx
Speedmaster round port heads
6.8 rods
4.25 forged scat crank
4.15 Ross butler 18cc pistons
10.1:1 CR approx
1.65 rockers
KRE dual quad intake
Headers and dual 2.5" exhaust with super turbo mufflers
275/60r15 rear tire
Power brakes
Power steering
Air conditioning

Going hydraulic roller and was looking at butlers 236/242 cam @ .050 and .573/.594 lift with 1.65 rockers. I like being different so I asked butler for a custom cam rec and I think I like what they recommended. The specs on the custom cam are 239/247 @ 050 .623/.633 lift with 1.65 rockers and I would get it on a 112 lsa.

They stated it would make a little more torque and obviously it's not wildly different but interested in your thoughts. I know the speedmasters will like the higher lift.

It's a hot street car I plan on driving a lot.

That cam might be close on the power brakes. The 240/248 112 in my 465 makes around 10" at idle, but I am at 4500 ft. I have a bit more compression as well. You might be in the 12-14" range. You'd need a dual diaphram deal, probably a 9" unit like the C6 corvette unit that DSE sells. Or hydroboost.

From a driving standpoint, I don't think it's too much cam. You'll know it's there, but it's still going to produce good power and torque.

The dual quad intake is probably CFM overkill for the size and rpm that this engine will turn. Unless you're just after the cool factor, you're going to be dealing with getting that type of setup dialed in. I'd prefer a port matched Torker II or Northwind myself.

Thank you for the input. I might be better off just staying with the 236/242 cam or maybe I could order the custom 239/247 cam on a 114 lsa to help with vacuum?
And yes I'm 100% going with dual quads for the cool factor. I have no guilt admitting that at all.

I have the Butler 236/242 cam on a 112 LSA but with 1.5 rockers. Other than the dual quads, my motor is similar to yours. I get right around 15" vacuum at 850 rpm. You can hear the cam at idle but I think it's pretty mild. You can hear it in my signature video. If I just putz around town like a sane person it's very tame. With BFG tires, I can break them loose in 3rd gear. That's with a 3.31 rear. If I had a 3.55 or 3.73 I think it would be crazy.

Very similar cam, how does it idle? How the street characteristics of it?

Do you think it's too mild or are you happy with it? From what I've heard, people really enjoy the cam. Kauffman also makes a very similar cam but with slightly more intake lift and more advertised duration, same at .050 though.

For my use, which is purely street driving, I'm very happy with it. Any more cam, I think drivability would suffer and with street tires and factory suspension, more power would be useless. Right now I'm running MT drag radials due to the traction issues. That helped a lot but I think it handled better with the BFGs so I'm going back to those and just live with the wheel spin, which is fun anyway.

I think that with that latter Butler cam and the AC you might need a solenoid to kick up the idle some when the AC turns on.

Verdoro68 (Ken) is running that cam on a 114LSA and if I'm not mistaken his car has AC and is also an auto trans, so maybe he'll chime in.

I am running a 251/259 Ultradyne on a 112. My engine is a 462 with E-Heads and 2X4 with a bathtub intake. But the cam is a flat tappet solid. I just barely have enough vacuum for the brakes. 13-13.5" HG. That's at 1000-1100 RPM. If you have a modern AC compressor, you will probably be OK. The old A6 may pull your idle down where a solenoid will be needed as mentioned.

Any thoughts on the Kaufman vs butler grinds. Both are by comp but it seems the Kaufman grind is an slower ramp profile and might be better suited for 1.65 rockers?

Slower ramp = longevity and less chance of wiping a lobe on break in.

Well it's a hydraulic roller cam but yes it should be easier on the valve train. I guess I also need to ask my self if a bigger cam is worth it. I can of course make it work with idle up solenoid as suggested and possibly a vacuum reservoir or pump or doing a hydro boost setup. Or I can just calm myself down and be happy with the slight less power and I'll never even know what I'm missing.

My concerns/thoughts are that I have a lot of money on this build now (as you all know all too well) and I want to make sure I'm happy with it and not wanting more.

I'll probably stress about the decision for far too long until one night after a long day at work and a few whiskeys I'll just order one and live with the decision drunk me makes.

If that's the case, I'd go with with the milder cam. The Butler 232/246. For that type of usage, you won't miss any tidbit more performance and it will be easier to tune and enjoy.

I'm assuming you meant the 236/242? If so, yes I think this is the logical decision. But might go with the Kauffman version for slightly more lift in the intake (very slightly).

Yes! 236/242 is what I meant to type. The Kaufman cam seems like a very good choice too.

Are your heads being setup for the roller cam? If they are coming off I would have them milled to bump up the compression..and use the higher lift Butler cam or see if you could get one with slightly less duration like 235/245.
