I have a flip phone that I guess can do most anything, but for me, hardly a clue other then to answer it and make a call. Do I need a smart phone.........H_LL no. SO when I get in a jam with my flip phone, have to call the 30 year old next door and he can answer/fix any thing wrong/not working with it.

But the payback comes in different ways. The other day he came over and asked my help unloading 40 or 50 pound bags of mulch for his mother. No problem, he brought some PBR as payback.

Awhile back he came over and asked my help to change a tire on his KIA I think. I'm thinkin, REALLY ?????????????????? He hardly had a clue, couldn't even work a screw jack.

So in the end I guess it all works out.

It was backwards for me.

In the 90's as a teen, I was fixing old vehivles and small engines, generally for the greatest generation/silent generation/baby boomer in the family and neighborhood(s).

The absolute classic for that time period (and before I was wrenching in the 80's as a kid): Their answer to hard starts with cold carbed engines was pumping the hell out of the throttle and revving the engine to the moon until it would idle on its own and not stall :rolleyes: Simple and easy choke system tests and adjustments didn't exist in their mind and left to professionals if they weren't cheap bastards (and they ALL were cheap bastards!). That included so-called car guys.

Perform preventative maintenance? Hell no! Change the oil and maybe the air filter. After that, drive the car until it leaves them stranded.

Grease the suspension points at every oil change? Probably not. Change the coolant....ever (every 2 years back in the day)? Nope! Change the transmission fluid? Of course not. Change the rear end fluid? NEVER! (As my grandfather stated when he was in his 80's, "That needs to be changed?")

Before 100,000 miles, radiators plugged, engines overheated and damaged, automatic transmissions burned up needing rebuilds, suspension parts prematurely worn out and needing replacement, rear ends whining from old lube plus metal particles floating around and taking out bearings. Misfires burning up rings/cyl walls from not changing spark plugs/wires/distributor cap/rotor/points/condensers at the proper mileage intervals or when needed. Noisy lifters from oil changes not done on time or using Penzoil/Halvoline oil (those were big engine sludgers back then). Lets not forget the classic never checking the spare tire air pressure. It was as useless as cars today that don't even have one.

People were stupid and ignorant back then, too.
