1964 GP Questions ???
 

I took on a 64 grand prix without doing much research. I had no idea I would have so much trouble finding parts. I need help finding dropped front spindles.. Did any GM cars interchange with the 64?I can't even find stock spindles!!!

I don’t believe that anyone ever made dropped spindles for it. As for stock stuff, Franks in AZ is your best bet.

Your other best choice is Steve Barcak in AZ. He’s a member here, has tons of cars but not really in the parts business.

Does anyone know what front spindles interchange with the 64 grand prix? It looks like bonneville and impala will work.

Why not just cut the front coils?

Saves all this angst coming up with unicorn spindles.

have you considered lowering springs? eaton spring company or betts springs make custom springs. a lot better ride than cutting coils off of a factory spring.
they will probably need to know the factory ride height and and what the weight is and what height you are trying to lower to.

p.s.: i used aldan coil overs on my 64 GP to lower mine just enough to see it isn't stock height.

Thanks for the info so far. Besides spindles, any info on ANY interchangeability would be greatly appreciated.

Stock spindle interchange for sure between 63-64 all full-size Pontiac B body models overall 61-64 Pontiac B body front suspension interchanges I probably have some spindles.. Catalina Bonneville grand Prix all the same in that department . No drop spindles exist I ever heard of. There are disc brake conversions that use the stock drum spindles

I put QA1 adjustable coilovers on my 62 - you can get them with springs rated for a BBC. All I had to do to get them to fit was drill out the nutserts in the lower A-arm.

Great info, thanks so much! How about some transmission suggestions. Going with the 389, would like a 4 speed automatic. Anything good bolt right up?

a 2004R should fit in there. you will need the bop version. it should be built with billet internals and it will take the torque. it wont be cheap. i put one behind my 500 ci caddy, replaced the t-400. just needed a different slip yoke for the drive shaft. also use a lockup convertor. i used a b&m auto lockup switch. it can be set for different speeds. my caddy runs at 1770 rpms and 77 mph. perfect for freeway. 2.73 to 1 rear.

If you are using the original 389 that came in the car, make sure the block is drilled and tapped for an engine mounted starter. That was a transition year and I do not think all 389's had engine mounted starters or even a starter pad on the block for that matter. That will make a transmission change much more complicated, not impossible.

that is a very good point. who knows what has been done to these cars by all the different owners.
i was lucky when i bought my 64 grand prix. one of the previous owners had installed a t-400 and he half assed the neutral safety switch on the shifter.
i replaced it with a shiftworks shifter in the correct shift pattern.
