What color..

OK guys finally getting ready to paint my 66. I did a frame off a few years ago it could be considered a restomod I guess it's lowered an inch on UMI springs, bigger sway bars, four-wheel disc ,fast ratio steering box but Pontiac powered 455 4 speed all the metal works been done, I've been driving it in bare metal the last few years finally ready to have it painted came red on red with a painted white top. Here's my delema most of the cars montero red look a lot brighter than the darker color sample that came with the PHS I'm not sure why? Really don't want a bright red car I'm thinking I could live with the darker red or go to my ultimate favorite candlelight cream thoughts?

Do you care about resale value? What color is your interior currently and do you plan to redo it?

If it were me, I'd go Montero Red top and bottom and lose the white top, and keep the trim with the car in case you or a future owner want to change it to original. I'd also keep the red interior, but if that ship has sailed, black or parchment would look good too.

I know there are some fans, including yourself, of candlelight cream, but you will be limiting your market when it comes time to sell.

I wouldn't go to the trouble of painting a non-investment grade type of car I plan to drive and keep (for the foreseeable future) with a color I just "could live with". Pick whatever period color brings you delight.

Interior is done and still red I never put the original seats back in because I was finishing the interior during Covid and couldn't get the covers. I found a set of red BMW seats that I installed that match pretty good and actually wired them up eight way power so comfortable I've never ever gotten around to putting the stock seats back in. The white top is definitely going.. not really worried about resale thinking about the extra work involve jamming the whole thing where all the jams are in good shape and already red.

I love contrasting red interiors personally. If this was my car, I'd be doing either a very deep black or a very clean white. Silver would be a distant third on my list.

Since this car isn't factory, isn't an investment grade car and is your driver, I echo the sentiment to paint it what you want and not worry about resale, having to go with a period color etc. This is yours, make it that way.

My only piece of advice from experience is to paint the car some type of oem color that is readily available. That way you get can touch-up as needed easily and without fuss for when you get chips and such.

Your paint sample sounds great. Like my dark Verdoro green result pops vs pale Voodoo green.

I hadn't thought about the contrasting colors, but you're right that is pretty cool..

white is always clean even when dirty LOL

My too, in fact, these are my top two favorite color combinations right there.

I'm sure some people would disagree with me but I think a red interior limits your exterior color a bit. Certainly black or any color white would work. But since originality is not required, what about a really dark metallic red?

b-man 07-11-2025 03:56 PM

Paint it red to match the already nice jambs. Get a better color match from a good paint supplier using computer matching.

A lot less work and expense, a red on red car is boss in my opinion.

If that day ever comes that you or your heirs need to sell it there’s plenty more buyers for red cars than cream colored ones.

^^^^ As Bart noted.

Darker OEM red with white top - helps lot in the summer and looks sharp/period correct.

Lotta good opinions I appreciate it. My buddy gonna do the bodywork and paint. He's trying to sell me on a red Patina/ faded look He's done a few ,They're cool, says it will look like it's parked on the side of the road in the 70s I could use my old bumpers and trim. that's a little weathered and save some money he knows I drive the car alot and it won't hurt as bad if it gets scratched bumped into. Stay tuned

Rattle can black primer...

b-man 07-11-2025 09:42 PM

Fake patina sucks.

If you’re going to the trouble and expense to paint it……then just put a decent paint job on it.

Ya F the patina the cars been in various stages of primer the last few years it's stripped to bare metal and it's time for some color. B-man I think your right match the original red on the jams. The painted white top would be cool I don't think I've ever seen one in person. not sure I like that look. The holes for the trim were mudded up when I got it I have the trim it was in the trunk.. I thought it was a vinyl top, but the roof was in such good shape. It Didn't make sense until I got the PHS.

b-man 07-12-2025 08:54 AM

The white roof would make it stand out.

I’d do the roof white.

EXACTLY! what a contrast. Came with a PAINTED white roof, that's classic and never goes out of style. Its not a rubber roof...
