1970 Judge hood bump?
 

There was a white 1970 Judge for sale at Norwalk. A friend of mine was talking to the seller who was telling him that 1970 Judges had some sort of a bump in the hood to accommodate the Ram Air 5 engine. I've never heard of such a thing, my friend said the seller was quite knowledgeable about GTO Judges and owned a shop that built and restored cars. The Ram Air 5 was not a production engine, and I have no idea why they would put a bump in the hood of a 1970 Judge to accommodate it. Anyone here ever heard of such a thing?

I've heard a lot of drinking goes on at Norwalk sometimes .
Could have been intended as a prank.

While the RAV was a unique engine there was nothing about it that would require any kind of hood modification.

Not the hood, obviously, but I seem to remember reading somewhere many (like 40) years ago that the lower Ram Air pan was shaped to clear the Holley carburetor that was intended to be used on the RA V. Don't know if that's true, but maybe that's what he was thinking of?

Naw, the story deal was the OHC-6 SPRINT needed the hood bump to clear the cam tower.

Same…I’m not aware of any difference in 68-70 hoods, “bump” wise. I believe the air cleaner base deal was referenced in one of Pete’s books or Zazarine’s, with an accompanying photo.

Dont the 70 air cleaner bases have bumps to clear Holley 4 barrel float bowl adjusters? Think I read that somewhere. That would have been a RA V only carb.

Yes, the late 69 and 70 air cleaner bases made for the RA motors had push up in them so as to clear the float adjuster set screw and lock nut on the Holley carbs the RA5 motors came with.

There was not one difference in the hoods other then I heard once that had the RA5 gone into production for the masses the hood tack would have been part of the package and not optional as on the RAIII.

In 1969 they do not have these bumps.

Well thats not fully true Kenth because I have seen a late Aug RA4 who’s air cleaner base had them.

So while I might not be 100% right, neither are you.

1970 production started 8-11-1969.

For 1969 RAIV cars they did not have these bumps on the carb pan, at least not from factory.

Just like when 4 bolt main fitted blocks have been used as service replacement blocks in warranted 2 bbl motors this took place dispite what all of your catalogs say that you have.

Believe what you want, but I know what I saw on a non restored 2 year old car way back then.

The resto shop owner may have been thinking of the differences of the 1968 to 1970 hoods, where after '68 the inner brace structure was bumped up in the front area to clear the 1969 & 1970 fan shroud design.

70 models had the hood clearanced in preparation for the required smog pump. Most engines also had the two front intake bolts installed on the right side with studs for the same reason. Gov never made GM put the pumps on after all. Look most pics of the V engines and they wore a smog pump
