Master Cylinder color

What is the correct color of the master cylinder for a 65 GTO?

The Restoration Guide says black but I have also seen some claim they were natural in color.

Fremont built, Feb 65, Power Brakes

Thanks

Black oxide is correct.

Any idea how to replicate that?

A rattle can with semi gloss will do fine. If you have tri power, the carb bases are also that color.

the most correct method of reproduction is to use manganese parkerizing. This will give the very dark grey to a black, at that point is was machined for all the flat surfaces and mounting locations. GM did not paint cast iron parts, nor did they leave them raw, they used a chemical reaction to inhibit rust. The parkerized color varies from manufacturing location of part and or supplier, but it seems that all the factory master cylinders that I have seen are the black color, the replacement ones that GM sold over the parts counter (or even parts house) were raw cast as most were remanufactured used ones and the parkerizing was lost in that process, this is why many say they were just raw as by the 80's when these cars were being restored that's what they had on them. The very few ultra low mileage cars that are out there all have a black colored master.
