How rare is my Two-Tone 69 Firebird?
 

PHS documented Two-Tone 69 Firebird. This is a painted top, not vinyl. How rare are they?

If this is documented then why is it not on the cars build sheet as it should be?

The EC is the 2 tones of color.
The lower is 'E' Blue
The upper is 'C' white


If it was a Cordova top the 'C' would have been '1'

I looked a t my register of 1969 PHS's:

I have 90 1969 Firebird (not including those for TA's or convertibles) hardtops. Of those yours is the only one with two tone, by comparison about half of them have a vinyl top.

I also have 860 1969 GTO (not including pattern Judges or convertibles) hardtops. Of these I have 10 two tone cars or a bit over 1%.

Two tone cars were very popular in the 50's but by 1969 they were almost extinct thanks to vinyl top popularity. I read somewhere that 1969 was actually the peak of vinyl top popularity, being installed on over half of all American built cars that year.

Yours is a beautiful color combo, neat that it has a 4spd, not a common option on base 350 engine cars.

Agree with the above. My 69 350HO convertibles are rare, but they're rare for a reason, and that's because they didn't sell very many, so the public didn't buy in. One of them is Champagne with a green interior and top, and since PHS doesn't break it down, I'll never know if it's one-of-one. Point is Champagne didn't sell well, so rare doesn't always equal a higher resale value. Your car is a striking combo and would make it more desirable. I like the look of a painted roof, and if I had a vinyl top I didn't like, I'd paint it a different color. I once had a 67 Karman Ghia that was yellow with a black hardtop, and that looked very cool.

As far as my research tells me there’s no way to really know. I had tried to see if there was any way to figure out how many limelight green 69s were made. Nothing was ever documented as far as production numbers on colors or color combos. With that I’d just anecdotally say yours is a rare combo. They were largely all vinyl tops.

I’m certain it’s rare but no way to know how many were ordered. It’s been asked a lot on A body cars too.

What makes it exceptionally rare is the fact it was kept that way. It is not unusual at all that many types of vehicles that had 2 tone top or a vinyl top were redone at some point with a solid color repaint. The real advantage now many years later with the non vinyl 2 tone is the roof and sail panels is not completely rusted away!!

I’ve only ever had one car that was factory two tone, still have it. It’s actually one of those Canadian cheviac’s, Palladium Silver over Burgundy. Interestingly that color scheme isn’t on the factory recommendation list of combinations. It also still has the two different paint codes wax markered on the firewall.

Last tidbit, the Canadian Pontiacs also offered a factory option of just the moldings needed for vinyl top or two tone without the actual vinyl top or two tone paint. This was not offered on US cars.
