64 Grand Prix GT (What's it worth?)
 

Found a 64 Grand Prix a couple hundred miles away, so I haven't looked at it yet, but I thought that I would get the opinion of the herd on its value before I drove 3 hours to look at it.

The seller says that it is a 421 4bbl, auto trans, with the gauge package and will "drive under its own power with a gallon jug of gas."

Only if it actually does have a 421.

That thing is a rotted mess.

I wouldn’t bother making the drive to look at it until the seller confirms it’s a 421, the engine code and the presence of a transfer lug on the block will tell you.

I have seen alot worse, but I agree that it is probably only worth the value of the engine at this point. The other parts are a hard sell, Pontiac B bodies are just not that valuable unless they are one of the performance versions. A good solid runner doesn't usually top $20k in sales unless it is a manual transmission, or tripower or a SD or 2+2.

So what's a "running" 421 going for nowadays?

The 4-barrel 1964 421 came with the low-performance small valve 345 heads, dime a dozen and nobody’s looking for them or will pay anything for them.

All of the Tri-Power 421 engines that year used the sought after big valve 716 heads. Doubtful this engine has those heads (GTO 389s all used them too) but you never know, chances are slim to none.

The only items of real value are the block and crank. Likely the timing cover is rotten and no longer useable.

So as a runner who knows exactly maybe a grand or so after you’ve done the work extracting it from that wreck. The knowledgeable buyer isn’t going to run it in their car as is nor will they want to pay a lot for parts attached to it they don’t want.

Bucket seats have value... as well as some other odds and ends.. depending on condition..

If you want to go to the trouble of parting it out it is worth more as a parts car. I disagree that no one wants a 421 4bbl. that is in running condition. That is exactly what I have in my 1964 GP. The car has many good parts. Maybe in Florida nobody will want it. In this part of the country (NE) it would be worth more than in the south or west. But, you have to want to part it out.

That's an I want it price, not an " I think there's money to be made on it price"

I think a 421 that you can bolt a starter to is worth 1500, At least that's what it would take to get my short block out from under my bench.

The rest is probably worth $1000. The odds of it being a 421 are probably slim.
