68 Power Steering Gear

After adjusting the old steering gear, I’ve decided to replace it. It’s just too worn to be safe. Will the gearbox come up and out from under the hood or does it have to be dropped out through the bottom? This is just a weekend cruise car so don’t need a race oriented feel but would like a quicker ratio box. There’s several on Rock Auto that seem to fit the bill (budget). Any suggestions to included brands to avoid are appreciated.

I always drop them out through the bottom.

Through the bottom for me too.

You'll probably find it easier to disconnect the pitman arm from the steering linkage and take the box to a machine shop to have them remove the arm.

I have a Pittman arm puller. There are some stubborn ones that need a little heat and persuasion with the big hammer to get loose-off.
