68 GTO Trunk Lid Alignment
 

On both sides of the end of the trunk lid it does not line up with the quarter panel.
The top of the lid is pretty much flush with the sides.
Is this a case of just playing with the hinges using some shims which would change the alignment or could it be related to the lock position?
I will be putting a new trunk weatherstrip in.
I have seen comments that advise using the shims in various positions on the hinges impacts the alignment of the trunk against the rear section and the sides but have not seen any comments regarding the lid closing past the quarter panel end.
Appreciate any comments.

If you are saying the trunk lid sticks out too far to the rear, going past the quarter panel where they curve down? The lid can be slid forward and backward in the hinge arm (or up and down if the trunk is open. However this will also effect the gap at the top (front) of the trunk lid.

I've never done it, but I've always wanted to put someone in the trunk with a light, close the lid tap it into perfect alignment with loose hinge bolts, then when it's just right have the person inside the trunk tighten the bolts :)

No the lid hangs down past the line of the adjacent quarter panel almost as if it is too long but is flush with each side and back.
I guess it is just a matter of playing with the hinges and latch and hopefully eventually hit the right combination.

I have attached a couple of photos which show the misalignment.

The photos are upside dow as I couldn’t work out how to rotate them.

Dataway - You can see that the lid hangs down on either side and I am not sure that shimming the hinges will lift it up without impacting the flush finish on either side and the rear of the lid.
Pretty sure it will be just trial and error and who knows, it may sort itself out.
The alternative is to just leave it as it is a consistent measurement on both sides.

I think that adjustment is all in the latch, and the weather strip that basically holds the lid up. The latch should slide up and down if I remember correctly.

Will it still be at the right height on the sides if you raise the that bottom lip flush with the quarters?

I used an aftermarket replacement lid on a 70, and it had the same issue. Is yours an original?

Yep, factory original lid from when the car was built in Oct 1967.

I don’t believe it will be flush with quarters if the latch is lifted but I am yet to try it out.
Just finishing the engine bay so I can get the rebuilt engine back in then will start to play around with the trunk lid.

You might need to slide it forward a little after that latch is raised

@Dawbs, how did the alignment turn out? Did you get it flush with the quarter metal?

Haven’t started to play with it yet.
Just focusing on putting the engine back in then will turn my attention to the trunk and will let you know how things go.

You didn't mention whether or not you installed the weatherstripping. It should be applied before trying to adjust the lid. And it's best to install the WS, close the lid and walk away for a few weeks or months to compress the seal, especially the repro seals.
I spent four days getting mine aligned correctly. I didn't use any shims but had to elongate the hinge holes a bit and used a 2x4 between the trunk opening and lid to pull the lid up to match the quarters near the bumper.
A small paint stirring stick works great to set the gaps all around.

I take the opposite approach. I hang and align the part (door or trunk lid) for ultimate fit with latches and strikers in place. After doing so, the rubber seals are installed. In some rare cases I have seriously "warmed" the seals with a heat gun before closing the part, just to help it conform.
