Muncie 4 speed
Currently running a Saginaw 4 speed in my 77 TA. But switching to a 67 Muncie m-20 I’m having difficulty finding the shifter rods. Not sure which ones I should be looking for as I’m not sure what all components from the Saginaw will transfer over. Any help would be appreciated. I know someone has done this swap before

I would say that this shifter installation kit would probably work.

It has been a while since I have done this but if I remember correctly, the only difference is the reverse rod is shorter from saginaw to muncie. The shifter rod for reverse on Saginaw is on shifter cover and the muncie is on the tail shaft. So if you can shorten reverse rod enough to fit muncie, should not be a problem. The 1-2 and 3-4 rod are about the same length but just check for binding on all 3 after install.

If I have understood correctly, that Saginaw should have the small/coarse-spline input shaft - which is what the early Muncie uses - so your clutch disc does not need to be changed.
If you go this route: 1) get the 1970 shifter mount; 2) if that 67-M20 is unmodified, then it should use the original small stud on a keyway - and the factory lever is only a rectangle opening - if that's the case, you can use ALL of the BW-ST10 levers. 3) the 1-2 & 3/4 rods for a BW-ST10 will work That leaves the reverse rod. This can be a bit tricky. I found an early Corvette reverse rod that works, but eventually came across a complete set of the correct rods and bit the bullet. You might not like to hear this; The 74.5-1981 BW-ST10 is by far the easiest second gen F-body four speed setup to buy; If you decide to get a BW-ST10, instead of using the 67 M20, finding all the parts will be easier, and all you'll need to do is change your clutch disc for the larger fine-spline disc that your car would have used from the factory. This is the 74.5-81 BW-ST parts including shifter mount: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1755191828 Compare that against the 70 Muncie parts (the reverse rod and shifter mount are the big difference): https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1755191922 And incase you noticed it, and you're a little confused, the 1971-1974.5 Muncie uses the "1970" rods, with the "BW-ST10" shifter mount. After you get all that ironed out, all that's left it the correct backdrive setup, and that comes down to the switch on your column, and the reverse light rod. I hope this helps. |

oh!
if that 67 Muncie has later v3 gear selectors*, you will need the gear levers correct for 70-74.5 Muncies. (* = I may have the wrong name, but let's roll with it) Early Muncie (v1) gear selectors: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...4&d=1624153844 Late Muncie (v3) gear selectors (ignore the wrong gear levers in this photo): https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...3&d=1500494265 This shows the early (v1) vs late (v2) selectors: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1755195523 I show these because the early (v1) and late (v2) selectors use a gear lever with only a rectangular opening in the lever; The later (v3) selectors require gear levers with scallops(?) on the sides of the rectangular cutouts on the levers. The BW-ST10 uses a selector that is like a Munice "v2" gear selector; The levers have rectangular cutouts without the scallops. If you hadn't guessed I had to figure all of this out recently. :) |
I was told to go with a 1973 Firebird Shifter installation kit. Everything else should be the same
|
who sells this “kit”?
I have found the “Hurst” (or the current incarnation) is quite happy to sell you stuff that won’t work. My knee-jerk reaction is that a 1973 Muncie equipped Firebird would have a four speed with a large tailhousing - which used the wrong mount for you (see shifter mounts pictured in post #4). |

Here is a pic of the tail shaft. And the side cover. We switched the side cover because the original had a small crack
