Can't get my 66 GTO out of Park
It is parked on a level surface. I've tried rocking it, I've tried when it is running with my foot on the brake. Brake lights work. Is there a shift solenoid somewhere or a way to override the locking mechanism? It has a 67 engine the transmission is either 66 or 67. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Well a 1966 automatic is a 2-speed Super Turbine 300 or ST-300.
A 1967 GTO automatic transmission would be a 3-speed Turbo Hydramatic 400 or TH400. So is your transmission a 2 or 3 speed? Either way there’s no solenoid of any kind involved with the park mechanism. If it’s stuck somehow the pan will need to come off which will drain the fluid to access the mechanism. Make sure your shift cable is connected and adjusted correctly before getting too far into it. |

This still have original shifter/linkages?
Column shift? I'd look at the linkage under the hood. https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1755558692 Check for anything binding the lever that attaches to tranny or the rod coming off the column where it rotates. Or any where in the linkage. Probably something simple. It still have original steering column also? If floor shigter do as B-Man said. Could be cable bad also if nothing noticeable? |

Just thought of something. If floor shifter the top button has to be pushed down to let the Shifter move out of park. (I think, newer ones do anyway)
Might check that also. |
You can disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and check to see if it will shift out of park. When I worked at a Pontiac garage we sold lots of shifter cables. People would change engines etc and neglect to reinstall the ground cables. Chassis would ground through the shift cable and melt the inner plastic. Cable would freeze up and trans could not be shifted. Just a possiblility.
