Pressing on rear axle bearings 68 Wagon
It's been about 5 years since I last installed rear axle bearings. I've got the axles out of the car, stripped and clean ready to press on the bearings. This is a vanilla stock 68 Pontiac 10 bolt rearend with pressed on bearings. I can't remember......... Do you generally put some sort of lube on the bearings and retainer rings before pressing them on, or leave them dry?
Thanks Joe :confused2 |
I use a trace of lube to press on the bearings but loctite on the retaining ring.
I once had a retainer (and bearing) lose its press fit and the axle walked out of the housing. The axle splines did a nice job of grinding off material from the inside of the axle tube as the axle migrated out. This was on a '68 Firebird. |
