Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner rebuild
 

The flappers did not close on the air cleaner so I decided to get it working again. I replaced both vacuum motors with replacements from Ames and got a new Thermostatic switch along with the vacuum line kit at the same time. Everything is installed but I still can't get the flappers to close. I checked the motors with a vacuum pump and they close perfectly. Next I ran a hose from the port on the manifold and the motors close again. So, is it possible that I got a bad switch or am I still doing something wrong with the vacuum line routing?

Both snorkels are normally open with engine off.
With engine running and vacuum applied, both snorkels should close. The drivers side is then controlled by the thermo switch to open as the temperature increases, gradually restricting vacuum as the temperature rises.
The passenger side will remain closed until the throttle is wide open and vacuum drops to zero. It will then open allowing more air to the carburetor. It will remain closed during normal cruising and idle conditions. .

The vacuum hose ‘T’ is between the manifold and temperature switch. Only the drivers side is controlled by the switch.

Thanks Ed, I have the hoses routed wrong. I will go out and redo the hoses tonight and let everyone know. I guess that it does not matter which port on the thermo switch I hook the hoses to. As in the right port gets the vacuum from the manifold and left goes to the drivers side motor, or is it the other way around

I don't think it matters but the service manual mentions to replace in the same orientation as removed.

I did not know that! Involved in automotive service all my life with Vega oil cap rubber still stuck under my nails but Still Learning. :)

Thanks to Ed I routed my hoses correctly and started the car. Passenger side snorkel closed right up but the drivers side will not close. I then ran the hose directly to the manifold bypassing the thermo switch and the snorkel closed on the Drivers side. The car had been idled for about 20 min. Everything has been returned back to the correct routing before I shut the engine off. SO, I think I may have a bad thermo switch.
